Which devices allow WiFi connection to be shared?

The company I work for explicitly deny users to connect to the internet on their corporate device via captive portals. Instead, users were provided with LINX8 tablets to connect to captive portals to gain internet access and then use the LINX tablet to share its WIFI connection to the corporate device.

The LINX8 devices are really flakey and often need restarts to get them working, or rebuilding, etc.

I'd like to replace the LINX8 devices with something else, but my google skills are failing. What do I need to look for to find out if a phone/tablet has the ability to share its WIFI connection (Note: I do not want them to share their 3G/4G mobile data connection).

I tried "Mobile phone dual channel wifi cards" and "twin channel wifi cards in mobile phones" but all the links seemed to talk about creating a Wireless hotspot to share the mobile data connection.

Can anyone advise?

Depends on how security is setup on site, might not be as easy as you think.

Easy option is using a fake MAC address from the LINX8 tablet on your phones wifi. However if work use WPA/WPA2 Enterprise you need your works domain account to auth.

PS you are opening a can of worms bringing personal devices on to the network :p Wannacry ;)

I was thinking of direct wifi/miracast type connection but prehaps not what your looking for.

It does not connect too the external internet with this method there could be a work around using this method is all i am saying like chromecast, where ever you bring in the internet it would be internal within the device since i have done research into this it can use your 3g or 4g internet or wifi which ever comes first with the connection i.e. the connection you want to use is the thing you need to get this sorted i think.

Like transferring this file to the other device without a router for instance wirelessly or avoiding the companys internet which is what you want.

Like a bridge then onto some device that shares the signal which is what you want externally.

Should be possible in the world of computers.

My 2 pence, i have no experience of a shared wifi connection.

I was thinking you said phone/tablet has the ability to share its WIFI connection

Okay connected to wifi you could hotspot or share it via direct wireless it acts like a ethernet cable or hdmi cable whatever internally i think it would use the wifi which the phone uses or 3g or 4g if your phone is connected to that.

I have yet to experiance direct wifi using internal internet access could give it a go.

Should be able to create a nother channel which is direct wireless :p.

With brains you will get a 100% work around using direct wireless but as for me i can see it will be suited to your needs here but i do not know fully a workaround i see it being like a shared router method prehaps with the phone?

With smartphones it can be tricky (as op says hotspot connection but i recommend direct wifi it is the best i can think off for a shared connection) to get what you want but 100 per cent possible if anyone makes a app tailored too your need here.

Maybe a create a hotspot which turns your phone into a modem or ad hoc or whatever i dunno as i have not researched wifi methods, you could use wifi methods to get what you want like creating a hotspot but the internet comes from wifi it self instead of internal phones internet like 3 or 4 g.

I just did a quick search, micro usb to wireless adaptor prehaps, i know the micro usb port(where you recharge the phone) on your phone can have many uses.

Maybe this but i know it is not what your looking for but a good step towards what your after see here > https://www.snbforums.com/threads/s...le-phone-to-the-router-usb-3g-tethering.9624/ instead of going to the router you can have it the other way, the phone.

If you ever need to tether i would recommend three all you can eat data plan give you 30gb of tethering and costs 27 quid a month on a 1 month contract which you can find here http://www.three.co.uk/Store/SIM/Pl...ll&data=All-you-can-eat&minutes=&type=alltype (why 1 month contract? it is all to do with quality of service, if it has been good you could get a 12mth contract or if it is bad just leave them, three has a lot of hate on their facebook page as for me my service from them has been good so am happy with that)

This post here i think is right up your alley https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-u...-phones-Can-we-use-3G-and-WiFi-simultaneously

Okay so dual band wifi for the phone yea i think this could be it... https://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1201813

Maybe use a app to utilize dual band wifi on the phone to your needs?

Just waiting for someone to expand my ideas i posted here.

Maybe get a nother smartphone that supports dual channel wireless, they do exist https://www.google.co.uk/search?saf...hXDWBQKHSmJAsg4FBDVAgiHASgC&biw=2560&bih=1310 .

This phone here supports dual channel despite it being published in 2011 http://pocketnow.com/2011/02/28/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-supports-dual-band-wi-fi-80211n

pfft dual band not channel sorry my mistake.

As for tethering 30gb from three gives better value and the biggest hotspot allowance for the price i think 30gb of data will be doable might not be enough but o well as long as you don't stream videos then is fine.

I stream a lot and thus i have used 68gbs of data and yea am on three mobile network.

This link here directs you to use bluetooth for wifi shareing as well .

https://www.androidpit.com/share-wifi-over-bluetooth

Get your phone online using a WiFi connection and you're then ready to configure the connection for sharing over Bluetooth.

i think it shares the current wifi connection i.e. coffee shop wifi and makes a bridge via bluetooth to be shared so you have coffeeshop wifi via bluetooth?

Correct me if i am wrong.

I believe i have found it https://www.google.co.uk/search?saf...9zUAhUHrRQKHZ6TBhQQvwUIJSgA&biw=2560&bih=1310 wifi repeater is what your after i think for sure.

It often happens that the signal from the router is not strong enough and there may be disconnections on the PC. In this case, we need a repeater – a device that completely duplicates the radio signal, extending the range of the router. But we first need to buy such a device. What should we do if we don’t have a repeater or another router to organize the bridge? In this case, your smartphone comes to help. You can use your Android phone as a Wi-Fi repeater. But there are certain limitations: such opportunities are not available on all smartphones; they only exist in Android versions 4+. Moreover, there are no built-in utilities, so you will have to install the special application that allows working with Wi-Fi module and extending its functionality. There are many of these programs, but not all of them are equally effective and stable. The FG router utility has the most extensive range of functions. But this app needs the Root rights; otherwise it will not have the range of options that you need.

fqrouter can make your mobile able to access restricted websites such as youtube/twitter from China. Besides that, it can also turn your mobile into a router sharing the free internet to other devices, if you have already [ROOT] your mobile.

so yea whatever wifi network your phone is connected to means via bluetooth tethering it shares the current wifi network your phone is connected too.

Yeah his workplaces internet will be filtered still well i did my best hacking away with the alternatives you see here, 30gb hotspot tethering with 4g mobile data yeah, unless i am mistaken he wants to share wifi right well bluetooth is one option, knowing what i read it can share the current wifi signal the phone is connected too.

This needs to be as specific as possible but i'll leave this for food for thought.

Think i'll try the bluetooth method my self sometime.

Pfft my moto 4g plus already has bluetooth shareing.

Just had an idea, using bluetooth while leaving my phones internet 4g running whilst using bluetooth, hoping it will not touch my tethering allowance.

My 2 pence :p.

Be cautious before starting up an unauthorised wifi hotspot. Enterprise wifi networks can be configured to scan for such things and, depending on your company, they might well frown on it. My previous employer definitely did sweeps for rogue APs within the building and you'd be required to turn it off if they figured it was you.
