Which game for a 5 year old as an introduction to gaming?

Minecraft with Minecraft for kids texture pack and baby animals mod.

Seriously, he/she will love it. You get to tame lambs, pigletts, wolf pups, calves and you can put the difficulty on peaceful for no mobs.

Do it.

For a 5 year old i would say that minecraft is a excellent option. The LEGO games are ok, however my son at that age got bored of them quickly after he completed them.

Minecraft is fun, simple, easy, she will be able to create buildings, explore etc. IMO its an ideal start to gaming on the PC.

My son is now 10, he has been gaming on the PC/xbox/PS2 since he was 3.

He currently is enjoying minecraft, and has done hrs and hrs of research via youtube LOL and its now attempting to build himself a "sky castle" LOL

Any old school Lucasarts point and click adventure games:

Monkey Island (1,2,3 & Tales From MI original or remastered[4 isn't listed as that was atrocious])

Full Throttle

Day of the Tentacle

Sam 'n' Max (Hit the road, Save the World, Beyond Time and Space & The Devil's Playhouse)

Indiana Jones (Last Crusade & Fate of Atlantis)

The Dig(TBH I hated this with a passion it was soooo boring but i'll list it or I'll get Flamed somthing harsh!)

Not Lucasarts but also worth a mention:

Beneath a Steel Sky(May be ok slightly mature content)

ToonStruck

Simion the Sorceror(Definitley not suitable)

Leisure Suit Larry 1-6(Definitley not suitable)

The Lego games, not so much Lego Batman, but Lego Star Wars Complete Saga and Lego Indiana Jones. My 5 year old daughter absolutely loves them, she plays those and laughs away like a loon. Terrific games for a kid of that age, colourful, easy to control, funny, teamwork orientated and with plenty of puzzles.

I have to say that her keyboard skills have come along in leaps and bounds since she started playing them and they do wonders for her problem solving skills and logical thinking.

Aside from the lego games, and I know you said PC would be preferred but it could be an idea to see if you can dig up an old snes or something.

The mostly simpler controls of old makes it nice and easy for a young beginner to pick up, not to mention usually less or simpler features to faff about with until she wants them. Plus the snes tends to be less full of 'nintendo hard' or 'sega rage' inducing games than the the nes/megadrives.

And though I'm sure she doesn't care to much, by and large the graphics still look nice to this day so she won't be staring at screens of digital gumpf from the pre16bit or early 3D era.
