Which game for a 5 year old as an introduction to gaming?

the monkey island games my little sister loves but she cant play them on her own due to the whole cant read properly. maybe one for later the 13 and 15 year old have loved them since they could read properly though.

Windows 7 has some crappy games built in that my sister loves too (5yr old) and i thought of another really good one but its just left my mind. god damnit.

"Minecraft with Minecraft for kids texture pack and baby animals mod." forgot who said it. But its an excellent suggestion. One of those games that she could play for the next 80 years and end up making her own minecraft 6core i7 with redstone XD

Just get, Go Diego Go Great Dinosaur Rescue on the Wii my daughter is coming 4 and loves it. Wii is great for kids that age, drop that keyboard and mouse snobbery with kids that age.

my son (5yo) plays the lego games, sonic , mario and he likes the kinect games too..all suitable and good for teaching him how to play

edit:hmm, you asked for pc games and i just posted console ones..i fail :(

5 just seems a bit young to me.

But if you're going to allow her to play games I think most, if not all have been suggested here.

Lego, or some of the educational games laying around on steam and in the high street.

Condemned. Will toughen her up for the real world.

*Or cause years of mental trauma.

Why not just go all out and give her amnesia while we're at it :p

+1 to the lego games though. Good laugh, and being co-op capable is awesome. If she's to start gaming so young, might as well make it an activity you can share together rather than just have her sitting on her own :). So i guess that just extends to any co-op game you can find that looks child-friendly as well.

my little sister (5) enjoys minecraft (peaceful mode XD) Although she cant do any of the more tricky crafting.

She watches us play all kinds of games. The main problem for her to play games on her own is just the reading aspect :/

Perhaps old PS2 games, spyro, crash bandicoot

she also likes drawing games and animal crossing on the DS.

Keyboard and mouse would be nice to teach. but really they are too young. the DS is a perfect platform for a kid of that age.

Until she can read and understand a little better (ie after a year or 2 of school) i think you should put the more "solid" idea of gaming aside. I understand you dont want a console newb as a daughter. Just give it time and make sure she grows up around high end PCs and such and she will take to them eventually.

That's what my children have done ;) my son was playing console games from 2 years old and went on to computers, and my little girl who is now 4 was playing a ds from 2 1/2, now plays snes, smd, wii, ps3 etc. My little one loves sonic and mario.

They can learn to read before they go to school ;)

I don't think it's to young for a keyboard and mouse.

I remember buying Alice for my niece, she was to afraid to play it, my children played it fine, but they've grown up loving resident evil, does this make me a bad parent :D

5 just seems a bit young to me.

Not really, my brother was playing Wii games at 5 (and pwning), and enjoys DS/iphone games (he's now six).

The amusing thing is, he will sit and play Brain Trainer and the like on his DS because it's a "game". Brain Trainer teaches him basic mathematics and English skills, angry birds teaches him about trajectory, Fifa teaches him coordination, tactics and surrounding awareness, Wii Sports teaches him hand-eye coordination - so introducing young children to gaming can be quite beneficial imo :)
