Which game series has the most iterations..?

Fifa has to be up there - 16 versions since 92, add in champions league, world cup, road to world cups and european championships, you would have another 10 or so, then if you factor in the major differences between the console versions, such as the wii, which are different enough to count as a different version.

39 without the Chocobo, 51 with. This doesn't include the different versions, ports, or collections. 110 with all the different versions, ports and collections.

Well the OP is using different versions ports and collections as criteria so we can safely say Final Fantasy easily wins the roost here.

It really depends on how you define iteration.
Generally an iteration is the next level of an existing design.
Therefore FF and Mario do not count as each game is different in both design and implementation. they all play differently, have different engines, mostly built from scratch etc..

Fifa on the other hand is basically the same game just updated every year both graphically and new functionality added. But essentially its the same game.

SF2 is another example.

Therefore I say FIFA is the out ant out winner.

FIFA often has different engines, and they often play differently. You can see this as they've changed over the years.

Therefore I say Final Fantasy is the 'out ant out' winner.

I don't think you could count Mario Kart and Mario Golf as iterations. Nor the flagship Super Mario Bros. games, or Mario Tennis etc. Each is a series on their own.
