Which GPU is tops for my ageing system?

I guess it depends on which way round the op was to go. He could get a AMD 260/270x etc then 6 months down the line upgrade mobo/cpu etc......

But personally I dont think there would be much benefit either way round, when you pair it with a Q6600.

Upgrading his CPU and MOBO on a low budget then still having to use a 460 isn't going to be that great. Any GPU demanding games will be held back massively.

I guess it depends how long OP would wait before then buying a new GPU as well.

A second hand 2500k/ 3570k and a cheap mobo, I think would be pretty good even if paired with a 460. Maybe max fps wont be increased, but minimums/average will be and general all round feel would be much better.

Could even grab a second hand 460, if cash is super tight. (I wouldnt recommend it tho)

My two cents.

I used a similar cpu (Q8200) @3Ghz with a HD7770 (slightly slower than a 260X) and it was a good balance. A much faster gpu would bottleneck I'm afraid.

Gaming performance is often determined by the GPU, not the CPU. Get yourself a Geforce GTX 970 and an additional 4 GB. When funds permit, get yourself a new motherboard and CPU.

That's probably out of the question due to budget constraints. Upgrading the PSU will mean no budget for the GPU. :(

I've got a Xigmatek NRP-MC651 in another system but is about a year older than the Corsair.

Without changing any other component from the OP, just wanting to see what other GPUs can make a good improvement to my system.

GTX 970 any, there all good, cheapest i've seen........................

Thats A GOOD CARD and at that price imao u should try and find the extra dosh to grab it for £229!! The Nvidia drivers are worth it in your situation, it'll give you the biggest bang for buck, without a doubt.

See how Nvidia drivers compare in this article.........

One upgrade that will benefit you at present would be the addition of 4gb of ram as long as you have a 64bit OS of course.

I have a similar system to the OP and wanted to go from 4gb to 8gb RAM. However you can't just buy it off the shelf these days and it's not peanuts to buy. In the end I stuck in an SSD instead and am very happy with the result.

Doesn't increase my fps of course, but it has made the whole computer much more pleasurable to use.

Oh shoot! Hope you HAVE got a 64-bit system? wouldn't wanna recommend anything before that, sorry

As AMDMatt has suggested a 260x, or if you like NVidia a 750ti. Either would be a nice upgrade and would be balanced with the rest of the system, neither should require a PSU upgrade either.

Thank you all for the information and suggestion. I am on Windows 7 64 bit OS which I reinstalled recently (transferred from using HDD to SSD).

I will see what sort of money the suggested cards cost but might hold off any more purchases for the time being and do a one time over haul which I guess would make more sense, but will be in +6 months.

Thanks for the info guys. Those GPUs seem like a great upgrade to my GTX460, are those GPUs okay with my PSU though?

@mzal - I'm going to look into the 771 mod, sounds like a great way to get more out of old tech.

If you need info on the 771 mod its all here http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/
A nicely overclocked xeon will not hold back a newer gpu as much and they are very cheap.

Higher base clock and better overclocking performance. All info here

The OP asked about a graphics card upgrade not proc?? Why try and confuse him with complex modding instructions regarding something he never even mentioned? If his cpu is quad and running 3.3 Ghz then he wouldn't get any bottleneck with the 750 ti.
In fact its a perfect match, and the one i recommended was £80 in B grade.
Bargain... but oh no lets derail the subject to cpu's?.............

A one time overhaul will cost your hundreds of pounds?! The £80 b grade msi 750 ti ( that i earlier linked ) would be the best bang for buck upgrade you could get, and you can upgrade now, not in six months.
Don't let people tell you your proc' isn't good enough. I could almost guarantee you, you'd see a good performance increase, for your 80 quid!:p

Your choice though dude.....

Thanks for the link - looks interesting, could be a cheap side project to take on :D

I did ask mzal earlier in my thread about this as he mentioned it and I was quite interested in learning more about this.

I appreciate your suggestion. At present I am considering options and thinking whether its worth putting in more money for a boost to my system.
