hi im new to pc gaming, have always used consoles before but want to start upgrading my pc and use that from now on instead. Its not a great set up to start with but currently i5 2310 2.9ghz processor, 8g ram, and an integrated intel hd graphics card which is the bit I want to upgrade first. was looking at Asus GeForce GTX 650Ti. would this be a good start?

spending around the 100 mark will I get a decent enough jump in performance or if this is a long term project does it make more sense to go more upmarket

any advice on what to go for? how far with each is overkill etc. il upgrade everytjing eventually but the gpu and psu seemed like the obvious place to start.

Something like this for PSU

And this for graphics;

Should get you some nice performance, ready for a bit more when you upgrade your other parts.

To throw another opinion into the mix; I wouldn't buy a 7870 for £215 when 7950s can be had for that price. Also, since you're buying this on credit, I'd maybe aim a little lower. Something like this will give you a huge jump over integrated graphics:

It's on a daily deal so maybe move quickly if you fancy it.

Also, that PSU is great but probably overkill. A basic, good-brand PSU will do you fine. Something like this would be great:

It's built by Seasonic (IIRC) and will provide enough grunt for a single top end card if you ever decide to upgrade to a more powerful GPU in the future.

Derp, I'm not sure what I was thinking there, I was even looking at the £217 one before as well :p

Early mornings aren't my friend :p

PSU wise, I reckon a higher capacity would be better as well as modular as it will last a lot longer in terms of possible upgrades for the future.

I agree, but that comes at a steep cost. Since the OP is just starting out, I was suggesting something a little more basic.
