Which GTA?

I did find some utility to convert savegames a while back (sa_id_convert.exe) but unfortunately it didn't seem to work :(

Edit: Finally got my saves working! Thanks for the heads-up about the depatcher.

-Installed game from my v2.00 dvd
-Used Depatcher to revert to v1.00
-Patched to v1.01

Savegame is dated 16th July 2005 so it may take me a while to get up to speed with the game again! Also seems I need to unplug my joypad as CJ is just running about randomly.

Problem I had with GTA3 was that the connectivity wasn't all that great, in that sometimes it was hard to find your way around e.g. how to get on to a bridge linking the islands. You'd drive to the right place, but be too low down, so until you actually got to know the city properly (or learn a route A->B 'parrot fashion') you had to cruise around for a couple of minutes looking for the way up.
That's the great thing, exploring is the nr1 thing I like to do most in GTA games.
I only got to the second island on GTA3 (did quite a few missions though), in the end I got frustrated with the lack of mission choices and the fact that some felt like a real chore. Vice City was for the most part very slick, I didn't have too many occasions where I got lost etc.

True, the story was worse in III imo, but as I said, I liek freeroam, it's the main reason I like GTA, I've spend hundreds of hours pointlessly driving through the desert/countryside in SA checking out all 100+ cars ( even though they are alike), or terrorizing some county hippies or old grannies :D. Or ramming into a bikers club with a truck and trailer so they all fall off and die :D.

I can't understand why people like VC more than SA though, it is superior in everything, controls, gfx, gameplay ( gangs, swimming, and many many many more), missions ( although the story is a bit worse (certainly not bad though at all, great in fact still), it has more and nicer and more varied missions), vehicles ( many more of em, and I love tuning), MUCH MUCH better world ( countryside ***, awesome bridges you can drive on the cables with a bike ) and more than one city, swimmming, multiplayer ( samp and mta:sa are far better than vcmp and mta vc).

I could go on all day but I'll never really understand why someone can like vc more than sa, if someone does, then gta isn't really the game for that person imo.

For me SA is one of the best if not in the top 3 games ever created. And vice city, well, isn't. Nice soundtrack, Miami style, nice catching story about a drug deal superior characters compared to even SA I think, although many of them return in SA eg the lawyer ''Rosenberg'', nice humor ( candy suxx :D,''easter egg'', rooftop jumping, etc) but not much more. Sa is the ultimate free roam game. ''You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name, it felt good to be out of the rain'' ( K-DST) while driving your tuned R32 skyline through the desert is an unbeatable experience or mowing down people with a combine, or trucking around then getting out and murdering hald the population with a minigun, drive up mt. chilliad and on a mountain bike and ride off the ramp on the top, making saltos before plummeting to the ground, or releasing the bike in mid air and opening a parachute, etc... You've even got a small part of liberty city hidden in it.

vice city is awsome :) san andreas has more game play elements but still for fun VC is rocking! also GTA2 was really fun to play, crazy above view and everything :)

I like free roam as much as the next guy (I started on the original GTA where scoring points was the main goal regardless of how you got them), but in GTA3 it just got frustrating sometimes trying to get to a given location.

Oh, SA definitely has more diversity in terms of both the game world and the things you can do. I just think the setting and storyline in VC helps to bolt it all together a bit better, it's more of a complete 'game experience' rather than a sandpit.

I can't /stand/ the gangsta style of San Andreas. I like the environments, and the size of the game is fantastic (i love the countryside) but that whole "im chillin, yo pass me da blunt homie" thing makes me laugh.

So it's Vice City for me, with it's eighties sensibilities. THAT is cool, not hanging out on a street corner with a handkerchief on your head.

^^ I found Vice city a better world too because of the storyline, it was easier to get into.

I didnt like how on SA you got all the gang stuff and defended the territorys and then completely out the blue you end up in the countryside with nothing to do with it, I gave up when I had to try and fly the plane.

I dont like the helicopters or planes, so why force me to fly em :(

I'd have to say Vice City, as much as I enjoyed all of the other installments Vice City just has that little bit extra. Loved the whole 80's Miami feel aswell as the Music, there wasn't a bad song on the whole soundtrack.

This has made me dig out my copies of all the games. Gonna play through each of em all the way as i havent done so in years, and i cant remember any of the storylines at all.

Gonna be PS2 version though i think. Not got them for PC, although i don't believe there are many differences apart from the modding community. :)

Hey,

Looking at Steam at the moment - seen the GTA games going for not a lot.

But which ones the best? only played GTA 3, vice city and san andreas briefley on mates consoles so im not too sure.

Few saying vice city's best? its cheaper!

cheers

I had great nostalgia from all three of those - but now I can hand-on-heart say that the only one worth playing is San Andreas. I played Vice City recently and it was horrible! But SA still has great playability :)

GTA2 is the best, followed by GTA1 then GTA3. They're all really good games though.

I didn't think much of San Andreas or Vice City, they just cheapened the series IMO.

Vice City ruled, great actors and voice acting, good storyline, good main characters, everything the other games were missing to some degree.
