hey guys,

today i noticed my R9 290 showing blue dots when on dark backgrounds (notice it on steam the most) so im going to replace it with a GTX 970.

£300 will be my limit and i may add another in the future.

it will be running with my [email protected]

im leaning towards the gigabyte G1 970, i dont like the new MSI design tbh

so what do you guys think?

Thought MSI were working off serial no's these days, if you don't ask you don't get-unless you have removed the core screw security tape.

They don't even care about that, as long as you send it back with all the bits.
The tape is there as a deterrent more than anything else.

Though my MSI RMA required the original invoice, you might want to contact the original seller for that.

I bought it from a friend and was not the original buyer, i checked msi's site and it asks for proof of purchase, and it had a g10 fitted before i bought it (cooler was re-fitted)

You sure it is your 290 not your monitor (i.e. dead/stuck-pixel?) :p

I would email MSI technical support / returns. Had a similar situation with Gigabyte who wanted proof of purchase but after I explained that it was a gift they seemed to be okay about it. Does your friend not have an online ecopy of a reciept or anything?

Unfortunately not, not its not the monitor, its loads of blue dots flashing all scattered, i played AC3 and it was artifacting everywhere

Ah that's artifacts. That practicular type usually only happens when the core clock is unstable- I get that when I overclocked and not increase enough voltage, and usually increasing voltage would sort it.

the card is at stock speeds tho :(

i have not OC'd it at all
But if it was me, I'd just try give the voltage a tiny bump and see it it'd solve the issue. Also, make sure you check the temp, not just the GPU but the vrm temp as well to make sure the temp is not higher than it should (for a card with the Twin FrozR cooler) to make sure the cooler was properly sitted, and to high temp may lead to artifact too.

Also you mentioned your friend was using the G10 on the card before, and then put the Twin FrozR cooler back on when he sold to you...do you know if he had removed old thermal paste and reapplied fresh ones, before sold to you? I'd definitely check if the temp is any issue first.

i tried a little more voltage and no joy, yeh the card dose it at idle, idles around 35-40 core and 35 VRAM temp

strange, ive only just noticed it and AC3 and AVP i noticed the artifacts

Both the gigabyte and MSI cards care great.

I wouldn't run two cards on that CPU though however one should be fine
