which GTX 970 to replace MSI R9 290 gaming?

Everyone knows the 970 is the card of moment. And they are not wrong.
Still a pointless sidegrade though from performance point of view, unless someone was looking at downsizing from ATX to smaller case/mini-itx.

If I was building another system I would take the 970 over the 290; however I wouldn't sell my existing card and replacing it with a similar performing 970 with a £100-£120 "upgrade" cost (after selling the existing card) for the sake of lower power-consumption.

This.

This is part of a quote I made in another thread:

here is a 57W to 78W difference in power consumption,with a reference R9 290.

This works out at a 31P to 41P a week difference if you play 30 hours of games.

This is £16 to £22 a year,if play games every week for the whole year at 18P a kWH.

Since most people probably take time off doing other things apart from gaming, then it means its probably closer to £15 a year.

The card needs to be replaced so i think the best card to get atm is the GTX970, if my card had warranty etc then i would keep it but unfortunately is dose not

Gibbo is trying to get 290's to around £200 in the near future if you can wait, otherwise I'd go for the 970, it sounds like you want to buy the 970 anyway.

Bit of a side-grade don't you think? Also, anything could be around the corner

not really i had 2 r290(s) and they gave me nothing but trouble great benchmark scores but often under performed in real world usage / games. The 970 is a great card and unless you try both cards to compare for yourself then you will not appreciate that :)

Upgrading anything on the PC can be deemed pointless or a side grade . We do it because we can and I for one am pleased that the choice of card on these forums isn't a AMD for a change. The choice however is still yours. Enjoy.

I went from a 290 to a 980 and tbh cannot tell any difference in game.

The MSI 970 works well I have been using one for a few days it runs quite and performs well. Finding one might be tricky at the moment unless you pay a premium.

I went from 290x to 970 with an 'upgrade cost' of £50. I don't regret it.

guys, the card is failing and i dont have warranty, so i need a new card, its not a upgrade, but as im buying new i thought the 970 is the best choice?
