which GTX 970 to replace MSI R9 290 gaming?

If you are certain that fixing the 290 is definitely beyond your capability, then yes go ahead and get a 970.

Before you do though, if you are certain you won't be trying to see if you could still rma it, see if flashing the card to a different bios. I'm not sure if the MSI Gaming 290 uses a reference board...if it does, you could try flashing to the reference bios...it's not like you got anything to lose...
