So, we have three major headset releases this year.
The Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive, and the Playstation headset.

Which do you think is going to gain the market share?

Personally, I thin the HTC Vive is going to win initially due to the backing from Valve. I think SteamVR will become the dominant platform and that the Rift will eventually drop it's own SDK in favour of Steam VR. What say you?

ps4 low initial set up cost

and too many noobs out there

just too many ps4 out there

its not gonna be better than the pc but games aren't either and they sell bucket loads

I have ordered the Rift, but I personally think all will be supported equally - mainly because I think the Gear VR is going to hugely facilitate mass adoption (there will be a million given away in the US alon with the new Galaxy S7 launch) and that the future is about standalone systems like the Rift/Vive starting to move closer to mobile systems like the Gear. We will eventually end up with a mass produced cheap but quality hybrid.

Plus I am well excited about foveated rendering, and systems like what SMI are working on, mean we could have really crisp visuals way before expected.

So basically, I think they will all succeed, but the real device which implements VR to the masses is yet to be seen.

If anything is going to push VR into the mainstream, it will be PSVR. I think it will succeed, it just can't price itself out of the living room market.

Between the 2 PC solutions, Vive seems to have more momentum with gamers, but I feel the Rift will be the initially more widely supported product because the seated experience is easier to cater for, and its media consumption seems more mature as well with things like Oculus Cinema and Facebook backing it.

I would think PS4 and one of the PC ones.

I agree with that. I voted for the Vive as that's the one I'm going to buy. But the Vive and the the Rift seem equally capable from what I've read.

I think the Playstation will get a bigger market, but what worries me is that people could be underwhelmed because of the hardware limitations. If the Playstation one fails then none of the VR Headsets could 'make it'.

The Rift and Vive will forge a near 50/50 duopoly of the PC market for many years I think, with PlayStation VR fizzling out after a couple of years and becoming obsolete due to a lack of support from developers and the demanding hardware requirements for VR meaning many high budget games won't support it.

I think it may come down to how aggressive Valve get with game development.

They have a strong following, and if they come out with some crazy-good stuff (even though it'll work on the Rift too), the Vive may end up selling more.

Also remember the Rift needs an extra tracking camera and its VR controllers to be bought separately, so we don't actually know what the 'full' cost of the Rift is.

When I eventually get VR I'm leaning towards the Vive. While I'd only use it for a sitting down experience I have faith in Steam.

Both will be just as successful as each other, the Vive I think will cater more to the enthusiast and high end market, the Rift will be the mass market HMD that's geared more for social interaction etc.

The GearVR being given away with all Galaxy S7 pre-orders though will spur a huge increase in the number of people interested and certainly boost the PC market as people try out the more advanced PC VR setup and immediately WANT the same.

From a logistics point of view though Steam has a huge customer base of PC gamers while Oculus have the backing of Facebook with its half a billion users. How they sell each HMD will have be geared towards the market they wish to take.

I really prefer the way the Vive does it's positional tracking. I think it's a much more elegant solution having the laser base stations and the detectors on the headset / controllers, rather than the Rift way of having an IR camera and IR LEDs on the headset / controllers.

The more I see of the Vive, the more I think it's going to be the one for PC gaming.

I agree. And I'll be ordering a Vive tomorrow.

Though the Rift is cheaper and has much more market 'presence' via facebook.

Betamax vs. VHS.

I still think the Vive will succeed over the other contenders. It's the long term success of VR in general that concerns me.

Do you bet against Gabe Newell or Mark Zuckerberg. When it comes to gaming Gabe has been pretty perceptive and all Zucks did was make facebook, which is ****. ;)

if the market isn't big enough to support more than one headset then its probably not a market that is going to survive, so we should actually want all of the headsets to be successful. Going by both the Rift and HTC being sold out to about June and May respectively, I would say the are both doing OK by the manufacturers standards.

The PC options won't be what pushes the sector IMO, they require too much PC horsepower to sell boat loads to the masses. That doesn't mean they won't be the best quality option, just not what ends up being the most popular.

My money would be on the PS4 option.

I think there has been too much money invested for the last poll option to become a reality*

*scuse the pun.

Right now I simply can't look past the chance to play REZ in VR on the PS4.

I don't own a PS4...but I would buy one just for that.
