Which headset ?

Hi all,

Been digging around on which headset to invest in. And was hoping I could pick the brains of the userbase.

By bro has asked for a complete VR setup so I started to look at which headset would be best invested in and future proof. He uses the PSVR frequently but wants to get access to more titles.

The Quest 2 seems to be the product of choice, but unsure if it's spec is better suited to the Occulus store titles. I realise you can plug/wirelessly connect to a PC which I assume would give you access to other PC based titles but it's at this point I begin wondering if a dedicated headset would be a better choice.

TIA

Currently only three decent choices:

Quest 2 - Cheapest and most versatile, requires a Facebook account. Can do wireless PC VR (if your Wi-Fi is up to it). USB Link connection isn't as good as dedicated VR displayport connections, but good enough. Excellent controllers with long battery life. Can also do hand tracking (which is more of a gimmick right now). Isn't that comfortable out of the box - need to buy an add-on strap and/or facial interface for best results.

Valve Index - Best all round system with the best comfort, refresh rate and FOV, excellent audio, and most advanced controllers, but not as high resolution as the Quest 2. Requires base stations to be setup, and is very expensive.

HP Reverb G2- Priced half-way between the Rift and Index. Highest resolution and sharpness of all the headsets (but requres a monster PC to get the best out of it), same audio as Index, but lower FOV. Controllers are the worst out of the three, with poor battery life, and worse tracking (but usable).

When PSVR2 launches that'll be another option, but by then the Quest Pro/Quest 3 will be out.

Also only the Quest 2 is readily available - you can buy one right now. The Index and G2 are in high demand but only come into stock sporadically.

thanks do much for that, that really helps.

Is the Quest2 able to play all titles when PC connected? it sounds like the only viable option today

Yes it is. Though having a decent wifi setup means you can do it wirelessly, which is so much more engrossing than wired (at least for me). Being able to just spin around to turn, without constantly fearing that you're wrapping yourself up in a cable etc, is really nice.

I have a reverb G2 and a quest 2. For pure PCVR the reverb G2 is the superior headset but that said the difference is not as big as you might think. As a VR fanboy I am happy owning both but for most people esp if you fancy a bit of stand alone VR I think at half the price the quest 2 is the better choice. Has slightly better tracking and better controllers as well.

I too have both and if I had to pick 1 i'd choose the quest 2. The reverb is great and for simming it cant be beaten but the quest 2 is more of an all rounder and potentially wireless.

BTW, I have a Quest 2 and an Index. I use the Index for PC VR, as though it's lower resolution, it's actually sharper than Quest 2 over link and doesn't suffer from compression artefacts in busy/dark scenes.

Quest 2 gets used for active and room scale games, where the wireless makes a huge difference, and for watching movies where the resolution and clear lenses make for a very immersive home theatre experience.

If the Quest 2 had been available when I was looking to upgrade from my Rift CV1, I would have gone for that over an Index no problem. The biggest thing for me about the index is the huge FOV in comparison to the Quest 2. I really miss that when I go back to the Quest.

Another with both Q2 and G2 here and I echo the thoughts above. Quest2 is hands down the best for a newcomer to VR. The only downside of the Quest which hasn't been mentioned is the requirement for a Facebook account. I've linked mine to my son's account, which he uses once a year on his birthday, so that's no real issue for me.

So I got my Quest 2, pretty damn impressive compared to my PSVR and when I was using the Samsung gear and my s8+. Annoyingly my old Oculus account (with the S8) none of the games seem to port over but I guess thats limited to the device I purchased them under.

So far I've spent most time flying around in Google Earth VR from steam, the WiFi on 5Ghz seems rock solid, just amazing. So thanks for the recommendation.

I just need to find some games to delve into the VR Lab from Steam is pretty cool, I'm sure I'm just getting started so any recommendation be it Oculus, Sidequest or Steam would be appreciated.

My home PC is a 3700x with a 2080 Super so handles stuff pretty well (all thanks to the recommendations here)

Hotdogs horseshoes and grenades, best firearms simulation on VR I think.

Dead effect 2, zombie in space with co-op mode and lots different game modes and sort loot guns similar to borderlands.

Blood trail, single player killing simulator lol.

Zero caliber, military shooter with co-op mode.

Payday 2 VR, you can also play with none vr players at same time .

Any of the steam games mentioned above are worth trying but it's worth waiting for a sale. With the exception of HL Alyx which is newish I got most of them for about a tenner in a steam, humble or green man gaming sale within a couple of months of looking. Or just buy Skyrim VR at whatever it's listed at today and play that forever.

I've not tried modding skyrim VR yet. Got 700 hours in the non vr versions with mods but it didn't seem worth the bother on the quest. Now I've got the quest 2 it shows up the texture and model shortcomings more so I might have a go at the weekend.

For game recommendations there's also star wars squadrons. It isn't terrible if you like star wars or squadrons.
Hellblade was good until I got to a boss fight. Fornicate boss fights.
