Hi guys I have signed upto O2 20mb Broadband, it gets turned on Monday and I have been quoted a 13mb guaranteed speed which I am happy with, my BT sockett is in the ground floor front front room and so is my Xbox360 which I use for 90% of my online gaiming and also for streaming films from my PC, my PC is on the first floor in the back room so an exstension league from the PC room to the phone sockett would be quite messy so I have been advised to get 2 Homeplugs to network my PC to my O2 router and connect my Xbox360 direct to the O2 router, is this the best way and if so what speed and type of Homeplug would you guys reccomend ?? I dont want to loose any broadband speed to my PC or Xbox360.

Cheers guys sounds good, are these going to be fast enough to not bottleneck my internet speed ?

Also am I going the right thing in using homeplugs or would it be best to just run a network cable up the stairs (this was my last result)

Devolo AV200 are very good, able to stream 1080p video from NAS to desktop through an RCD!

Netgear equivalent (HDX101) that I tried prior to these homeplugs were slow and inconsistent and more expensive, so wouldn't recommend.

I have the Netgear "200Mbit" ones, when transfering using them I get around 5-6mb/s from linux to windows, and 3-4.5mb/s from windows to windows. They are around 15M away in a new (~4years old) flat.

I got the zyxtel 200 Mbps ones. Real world speeds are 65 Mbps (8MB/s) using multithreaded ftp programs to my XBox 1.

Belkin have released 1000 mbps ones now.

Cheers guys, would it just be easier and cheaper to get a wireless network card or dongle for my pc will i be able to achieve full internet speed doing it this way ?

Ok how about if i install some network connectors to the wall and run cat 5 cable around the outside of my house, how easy is this and what would i need other than cat 5 cable, rj-45 connectors and wall face plates ? Can someone draw me up a plan

85mbps is all you need to be honest for just your dsl line, not much point in looking any higher as you wont see the benefit unless you're hd streaming.

I do stream from my pc to my xbox360 also 2 x homeplugs will cost me between £50 - £100 but surely i can buy some cat 5 cable and install a wired network cheaper and i suppose its more reliable and faster just not sure what i need do i just get two wall sockets and connect them via a cat 5 cable running up the outside wall

Get a switch, get some cable which is rated for external depending on how long you want to keep it out there/have a hassle free install (otherwise just use cat 5e and it should be good enough for a couple of years from what most people seem to say!).

Have fun!

if you buy good sockets and the kit to make the connections its going to cost a fair bit

you could just run the bare cable and crimp on 2 connectors quite cheaply but may look ugly

Homeplugs are very good vs wifi but if you might download and stream at the same time then get at least homeplug av as they will both take up bandwidth but have QoS to help keep the streaming going, price is very similar to older 85mbps units now as well.

reccomeing zyxel as kit ssems well made and uk website, devolu are premium product as well, netgear and other brands seem to have choppped and chagned the technology in their plugs so make sure you know what your getting adn which standard it runs on

have recently had 3 of a set of 4 generic homeplugs go bad after a year som buy from somebody that makes their equipment to last not just the cheapest

cheers guys, I think I will just get the Devolo 1154 Homeplug High Speed Powerline twin pack (Twin Pack Starter Kit) this is 85mbps I will try this and see how I go.

Would homeplugs reduce my ping in gaming? I'm on Sky BB max just using a wireless router and usb dongle at the moment.

edit - The standard USB modem provided free by many ISPs is not HomePlug compatible* so you would normally replace this for a Router Modem. note* it is possible to use the USB modem in a Windows Internet share setup with HomePlug, but it is not the ideal configuration. Tiscali's MTU is 1500

What does this mean?

edit2. I take it a normal cat5 cable connected to the router then my pc would be fastest?
