I'd like to get myself a NAS for storing all my media that I stream to my Amazon FireTV and since i'm on a budget (£120 max) i thought about getting one of those HP jobbies people keep mentioning. There seems to be a lot of different versions though so I wouldn't mind some advice on which models will suit me needs. If possible i'd like one thats powerful enough to transcode with Plex Media Server. Also, can you really install the Synology software on them? I would have thought the software was propriety?

Thanks

I've got a N54l that I've setup as a NAS, I've run plex on that and unfortunately not enough power for transcoding in my experience.
The slightly more expensive Gen8 G1610T is good enough for a single 1080p stream (plex suggest any cpu with a passmark score over 2000 for single stream, g2610t comes in at 2336)

My N40L can easily transcode to my phone and Intel NUC with no issues at all, I have tried it with 2 1080p files aswell with no problems.

My server is running Win 2012 R2 with drive mapping through AD DS.
