Which iPod?

Right, so my 2gb iPod has finally packed in and I'm in need of a replacement. I'll happily shell out the money for a 16gb Touch if I feel it's worth it pending a few questions answered.

I'll be using it at work, in the gym, outside running or cycling so it'll take some knocks and scratches, get dropped, be operated with oil/grease/muck on my hands. Also might not be able to charge it for a few days at a time.

I listen to audio books and music (might do video if it's practical) so 8gb is probably a minimum, old 2gb was far too little.

Are the 80gb/160gb Classics solid state storage or are they likely to not respond well to vibration/trauma etc? Though 80gb is possibly overkill anyway.

Pocket space isn't too much of an issue, my pockets are generally full of crap anyway so the differences in size won't matter too much.

So which iPod would you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

I have an 8Gb touch here although I use it mostly as a PDA more so than my main music player (just ordered a 160Gb classic to replace my full 80Gb one!:))

In terms of durability I'm not overly worried about my touch anymore than I am by my phone or other item with a large screen that I keep in my pockets, its well built and the screen is very easy to keep clean although I'm not sure operating it with hands covered in grease and oil is a terribly good idea for anything!

The iPod Classic are not solid state, they use small hard drives although all of the iPods that I have ever owned have never skipped on playback due to vibration, the battery life on them is also supposed to be excellent and the sound quality is amongst the best available from a portable player.

Have you considered one of the new style Nanos? The 8Gb ones are pretty reasonably priced and would give you the option for video playback while keeping the advantage of the solid state storage over a hard drive and also being a little bit more robust and pocketable than the touch :)

My choice would be between the nano or the classic. The classics are not solid state, however i have ever had mine skip on me. The classic also has more battery life (30 hours for the 80gb compared to 24 for the nano. The nano is much smaller but you say thats not a problem. Its cheaper aswell but you get better value per gb with the classic.

Its a hard choice and im not sure which one id get if i had to choose.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

Think I've pretty much eliminated the Touch from my decision, though it does seem a fantastic gadget I don't think I'd get the most out of it.

It isn't so much skipping that worries me on the Classic it's just that I consider it another moving part that can go wrong.

Since my old iPod was just 2gb it'd be a nice leap to go up to 8gb but I can't help thinking 80gb would give me a whole lot more options. If anything I'd prefer the more bulky build of the Classic.

Decisions decisions.....

I went mad and bought a 160Gb Classic (silver) and an 8Gb Touch. (I've given up grumbling about lack of customizable EQ)

They're both very nice although the Classic is a bit sluggish at times when working through the menus and sometimes even moving the volume up and down. This is *after* the latest firmware update too. Still a fine machine though and the massive capacity is great to have.

The Touch is fantastic. Even web browsing is really good on it and my dad was hugely impressed at how it displayed photos. The music playback screens look pretty nifty too. The whole thing oozes class. :)

Bought the wife a 160gb classic for christmas as she has just filled her 3 year old creative Zen 30gb (which isn't vista compatible:mad:). She is getting used to itunes and loves the classic, interface is a tad slow compared to the old Zen though. I got her a opaque rubber case as well to keep it scratch free. Lovely peice of kit and I managed to get £20 discount from an online retailor as well.

I bought an 8Gb Nano. Best descision I've ever made I recon. It does everything I need in an extremely compact form factor.

Battery lasts ages, you can stick films and music on it and it fits comfortably in your pocket. What more do you need?

I had the 80gb video it went through a hell of a lot, dropped many a time, down stairs once or twice.

I upgraded to the classic though, not enough music storage on the 80 gig one when I finally put all my cds on my computer.

Ive not had an iPod since the 2nd Gen 20gb ones. Got it from USA back in the day, it was horrendously bad on battery life and was huge compared to todays standards.
Going picking up my 8gb Touch tommorow, cant wait really to have an MP3 player back, a couple of my friends who have the Touch have said nothing but great things about it!
