This isn't something serious, but something I have been meaning to do for a while. I have downloaded the free, and frankly brilliant little app called DuoLingo on my Nexus 7 2.

I have sampled all the langages on there, I enjoy German the most, but figured which you guys think would be best?

I understand this app won't make me fluent in anyway, but it seems like a good way to be introduced into learning a language.

The options are:

German
French
Italian
Spanish
Portuguese

I have no previous knowledge or skill at speaking any other language other than English, and even then it's terrible haha.

I was thinking Italian, but I struggled with the basics of it!

It depends whether you want a challenge and the outcome you would like from learning the language as some are easier than others.

I'm reasonably fluent in French so I wouldn't go that route and did start German a little while ago and found it to be quite easy and enjoyable.

Plus as an engineer i'm sure it's our native tongue or something...

:p

I've always said Spanish is the next language I want to learn (after doing French, German and Mandarin), because I'd love to spend some time around South America. Yes, I'm aware of Portuguese, Brazil etc, but it would open up a lot of places.

I remember having a Mexican guy on a course with me who could do simultaneous translation between English and French, two second languages. I can't begin to comprehend how difficult that is to do, or to put my jewlousy in to words :p
