Got a decision to make do I go for the entry level 15" MBP or Top of the range MBA?

I'm pretty much decided to go down the Pro route due to the better spec, bigger screen and the new tech (Thunderbolt) but is there anything that I should consider before committing? Also are there any upgrades to the entry level 15" that are worth doing? The Hi-Res screen for instance?

Cheers :)

Great screen is worth paying a bit more for. I wouldn't bother with SSD - it's crap. OS X will run fine with the standard CPU and RAM - unless you have money to burn.

But as above, this may change if you have a specific need in mind.

Mainly remote support and ocuk tbh :)

The hi-res screen worth the extra then?

Can you add RAM yourself to the MBAs? I was under the impression you had to get the 4GB upgrade done by Apple prior to purchase.

Does it use the weird proprietary RAM? If it does then it'll have to be done by Apple. If it was standard SO-DIMM, you could do it yourself.

How comes?

Remote support and web browsing isn't particularly taxing. The MBA 11" is more than adequate and has a good res for an 11" screen. Plus 11 - 13" is perfect for a laptop and how laptops should be. Anything bigger defeats the purpose of small and portable and anything smaller gives up performance and usefulness for portability and battery life. If I was doing something like code compilation and the like, I'd be looking at Macbook Pros with better CPUs. If I was doing graphics work I'd be looking at bigger screens with higher res.

Going for the 11" is MY personal preference for that type of work though. You might prefer the 13".

It's soldered to the MB, so not upgradable easily after purchase. It's only £80 for the upgrade via Apple anyway, so definitely worth it if you go the MBA route.

My bad. I thought they used ordinary SO-DIMMs. So obviously the only option is have Apple upgrade it. Unless you're handy with a soldering iron :p

Well its been ordered. Went with the entry level 15" MBP but with the improved screen. I was going to wait till Lion came out but need it now tbh

OS X upgrades tend to be well priced, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Plus Lion looks very dull, so not missing anything!

Well she turned up today and I fired up for the first time following the football, sooooo much nicer to use than my previous MBP which the g/f now has so she's happy now as well as she's never had her own laptop before

So so pleased with it, question though I'm somewhat concerned about the battery seeing as the one in my previous macbook is more or less shot after what cant be more than 3 years so how should I treat the battery with this one to pro-long it's life?

Thanks :)

Does it make any difference? It's not a competitor, it's just the tracking details, plus, since you quoted it, it's a little hard to remove :p
