Which MMORPG are you looking forward to?

I can't see myself playing any more MMOs unless an awesome Star Wars based one comes out.

I've played:

Asheron's Call 2,
City of Heroes,
Everquest 2,
WoW,
and a few others I can't quite remember at the moment...

And all have felt a bit "meh" after a while. Always ends up with boring grinding.

I agree, the MMO market is (for me) dying a long drawn out death. Its become stale, cloned and more and more restrictive in what a player is allowed to do (just incase anyone gets upset...awwww)

When I think back to the sheer level of freedom and scope of what you could do in UO, and compare it to how linear and hand-held modern MMOs have become, I just know that its a genre on its last legs for me.

At the moment I am playing LOTRO , pretty much purely for the roleplay as it brings back memories of the RP I used to have on UO. Once I am done with that though, I will retire from MMOs completely. Its been a good 12 years in MMOs, but its become blindingly obvious to me that the genre has not been progressing since UO (in fact it seems to have done the opposite and become more linear and restrictive, rather than more open and free)

I don't think you are completely right, I mean - It's just a matter of time (Couple of years) till the big companies will understand that "Wow-alike" mmorpgs don't work anymore, and will start taking things in a different direction.
As of now, there is no MMORPG that is worth playing actually.
I am waiting for AION myself, but knowing it won't be much more than a grind fest. a good and fun one maybe but nothing special.

Let's hope blizzard are doing something regarding this, as they obviously can if they wanted to :).

See how many MMORPGS failed the past year/2 years... I don't think any company who start working on a new mmorpg will go that "failed route" yet again.

Just a matter of time...

DIABLO3 to keep us all satisfied while going through this hard time :D

I dont know, I been saying similar things to its only a matter of time, and the next one etc etc, for 8 years already since I left UO. I'm not sure that we will ever see the likes of UO-style gaming again, and to be fair its not only down to the game companies but also due to the playerbase having changed so much since the late 90s. Its almost an entirely different demographic now compared to then. Sometimes when people ask what was the best MMO I ever played, and I tell them it was one which didnt have any quests, you often lost your items on death, there were no level indicators on a creature to let you know if you could kill it...the only way was to try and die.

They tend to just stare at me in disbelief. :)

There is a certain shift towards less easy-mode games. Eve is going from strength to strength, several PvP centric games are in development. I think this is more to cater to the niche that remembers UO and the like though.

The WoW game mechanic will remain the most popular for a long time though - it offers the illusion of progress, power and importance with very little work required in return. Too many people find that attractive, especially among young players, of which there will always be a constant supply who don't know any better.

Thing is MMORPG have it wrong. hey need to be fps. With the RPG. RPHG for weapons and amour. But pure fps for teh fighting. When you have hat micture, it will be the ultimate MMO.
But you also need almost limitless crafting. Like SWG was and many many professions. Again like swg was.

Well Darkfall appears to have failed dramatically and the new EQ server is looking to be a different type than progression now so i have absolutely nothing to look forward too :(.

Darkfall is made by an indie team so it wont have everything at once, I'm loving it personally but it's a love hate relationship at times.

Personally now I'm waiting for Star Wars TOR, Mortal Online does look good but until it delivers the things it has said to deliver I'm sticking with what I'm playing with at the moment.

you can bet about 60% of the features that MO has announced wont make it at launch, it'll take a few months to get everything going.
