Which NAS?

I did a quick search in the forum and did not find any other thread asking this. I am thinking of getting myself a NAS storage and I admit I am baffled with all the choice and specs out there. I basically want something that will work autonomously (without having a PC on) and preferably have an inbuilt torrent server. Other things important to me are a good speed and relative quietness of operation. Any suggestions that will not break the bank? Price ideally not more than £150 (I can buy the HDD/SSD separately if need be). Thanks!

I think there are quite a few suggestion throughout this forum. However I would suggest Qnap or Synology (though I haven't used them). I'm currently running an Asus NAS-M25 (which is really good, and has fast R/W access & a torrent client). I've also got a Drobo FS, which although easy set up etc isn't the fastest in the world.

In terms of HDD's for the NAS, I'm using WD Green in the Drobo and WD Red in the Asus. Both units run 24/7, and have been for the past few years.

NAS's are so expensive these days it seems! I bought a Buffalo Linkstation HS-DH500GL which included a 500GB HDD a few years ago. Literally cost £40 delivered, it was reconditioned but no issues. I since upgraded it to a 2TB HDD, just before they went up in price so got that for about £45.

I can happily copy data to it across the network at 23Mb/sec and it has a Bittorrent client, plus Newsgroup if you install it and loads of other stuff since it runs Linux but I havent bothered with that.

23 megabits is awfully slow, maybe you mean megabytes. A cheap NAS is never going to give amazing performance.

Highly highly reccomend getting either a qnap or synology (I use a qnap) spent years messing around with trying to do it on the cheap and never got anything I was happy with til I bought it.

If the nas quotes max installed hdd id 1x4tb internal does that mean max total capacity over the whole nas device or just the max drive size internally ie I am also able to add 1tb usb drive alongside a 4tb internal drive?

You might be able to add USB drives. Which model are you looking at?

I review a lot of synology stuff HERE if it's of any help

Yeah I've read a review on your site about it. I did only view a few reviews. I didn't see any mention of whether the 4TB is the maximum drive size it supports or whether it meant something else. I do get the feeling its the maximum drive size it supports.

Many thanks guys. I shall spend some time reading and researching and come back with something more specific. Synology seems to be the prefered product in many places I searched!

Another vote for either Qnap or Synology. Historically I'd used QNAP's, but setup a Synology for a friend recently and really like the desktop interface that has.

Just one more thing, So far I always had WD HDD in my pc setups and have been happy with them. Any suggestions as to what to look out for when choosing a HDD for a Qnap or Synology NAS? Any transfer speeds etc? Thanks again!

A few friends are running the 3TB WD Red's with no issues.
Another has 8 of the recent Seagate 3TB, also with no issues.

Personally I'm a fan of the Hitachi drives (so Toshiba if you want capacities under 4TB).

Had issues with a few WD Green's, so I would avoid those at all costs.
