Which NAS?

Had issues with a few WD Green's, so I would avoid those at all costs.

I have had a pair of greens running raid 1 flawlessly for roughly 2 years.

I now run 2x3tb WD Reds which are shaping up to be fantastic drives.

WD have a really good rma system if there is a problem but in the many years I've been running WD drives I have never had to use it.

All HD's can suffer a failiure and I don't think one brand is more failiure prone than another. So I certainly wouldn't 'avoid at all costs' based on one user's experience.

USe the links Kia posted just to check the hard drive you selected is on their compatable list.

well i ordered up myself a Synology DS212j as i fancied 2 bays and there really is only myself and my gf streaming music/video so it should be fine power wise. I went with a 3TB WD Red hdd as i thought may as well do it right i guess rather than buying a 2TB Seagate or something far cheaper. And to top all this off i then purchased the asus n55u to replace my bebox. (582n) i am seriously hoping for some good results tomorrow once the gear arrives :D

i have to say though ocuk was not cheap for all that stuff, found another seller was £30-40 cheaper overall but i stuck with them as really i know there great and i haven't had any trouble over the years either.

that is what I am leaning towards too...

only reason i decided on this instead of the £50 cheaper 1 bay was that if i bought 3-4TB worth of data stored on 1 drive i'd be struggling to back it up or move that amount of data around if i had to.

What im planning to do is have all our documents/pictures/videos/music on the NAS and then really just operating system plus basic programs on the laptops and devices. Makes all the information available centrally throughout the network.

I've only got about 27GB worth of music and about 50GB of backed up data to sort through so the NAS won't be filled up that quickly i think.

i'll let you know how it goes tomorrow with the NAS and drive.

ps I did attempt a freenas setup with a Mobile 2.2Ghz dual core laptop i had with 2gb ram and a few laptop drives but im pretty lost really as to how to set that up. That's my main reason behind doing it this way. Im sure others have found freenas a breeze to set up but i didn't sadly.

I would respectfully disagree.

Have a quick search on the WD Green's and you'll see countless stories about very bad performance and clicking drives due to excessive head parking. Also a lack of TLER on these drives is not ideal for a hard drive being used in a RAID configuration.

Other WD drives (Black, Blue, RE3/4, etc) don't appear to have the same issues.

From a personal perspective I didn't use them in a RAID config, but suffered very poor performance, yet the drive exhibited no SMART issues.

Clearly this was just my personal experience, but I would advise anyone to do a bit of research before committing to using them in a NAS.

Fair enough. I agree with you. I think there was a specific model of green that did have a run of problems. I know they brought out a fix for the head parking issue but don't know much about it. I know TLER could be re-enabled on some of them too.

You see, what you guys are talking about, well. Sounds alien to me. I have no idea what all this head parking and disk clicking is all about, and this is precisely why I need to ask for advice regarding a HDD that will require minimum to no maintenance in a NAS....

Well i've received the synology DS212J and 3TB WD RED. the NAS itself is really quiet. i did find the NAS was wanting to do a full harddrive check.

Which appeared to be taking ages ie 5% checked within 30-40 minutes of it running, so i cancelled that and just ran a quick set up instead.

It does seem that the cpu usage is high when its transferring files and such however it does appear to play fine with multiple SD streams. I've yet to test it with some 1080p video.

Sadly there was a muck up with the router. but currently the wi-fi i have is working okay.

I think with regards to the hard drive choice I think if you go with something that is 5900RPM or similar rather than 7200RPM it should run quieter and be more reliable. I don't think speed is an issue with drive choice as really you wont reach 10MB/Sec+ unless your sitting with some good Wireless N kit or wired Gigabit Ethernet.

I meant to ask is there any way to run a full scan after setting the volume up or is does it have to be run when the volume is being created?

I bought a ds212j a couple of weeks ago and I'm very happy with it. I'm using a WD Green 1.5TB drive at the moment which appears to have a problem according to the SMART info. I'm hoping to buy 2 x 3TB WD Red drives soon to replace it, I believe my WD Green drive is one affected by the excessive head parking issue. I've only used it as it was sat doing nothing in an old rig I no longer have any use for (I tried to setup openmediavault on that machine but despite being able to ping it from my main pc I couldn't get the web interface to work so I gave up). I've got to say the performance of the ds212j is excellent, I can stream 1080p videos to my WD Live player without any issues and I stream FLAC files to my Nexus 7 via the DS Audio app and it works flawlessly even though my router is on the opposite side of the house.
