I have an NC10 and have set up an Asus 1005HA (with the 10 hour battery) and both are excellent. Obviously the Asus had the longer battery life (and a better trackpad) but was more expensive.

Both are excellent machines and will easily do what you require of them

n140, n110 bit expencive?!

what about The Packard Bell dot SR -has 250Gb and atom 280 ... dunno if its much better lol

Asus 1005HA! Really pleased with mine. I think it's much nicer than the NC-10. Keyboard is excellent.

Just to let you know if you look at them, the model with the Atom 270 in has an 8 hour battery and the one with the Atom 280 has the 10.5 hour battery.

With fair usage I have got over 8 hours out of my "10.5" hour battery.

erm ... still dunno what to chooce

NC10
BACKARD BELL DOT S? - someone know about it? ON SALE FOR £259 ATOM N280, WINDOWS 7 STARTER and 250GB ... looks better ...

also

SONY VPCW11S1E/W - for £279 ???

I have an NC10, and there are better alternatives now as it's getting a bit long in the tooth!

It only has wireless G, if you want wireless N it's not impossible to upgrade it though, costs about £35 in bits and you have to strip it down somewhat.

The battery life for me is 5 hours, that's with the brightness full, and wifi running all the time. You can get bigger batteries, but I believe they stick out of the bottom more.

It comes with XP, not a problem for me as it's a tool, and XP does me fine. I have a spare Windows 7 32 bit license though thanks to my Uni, so I'm thinking about sticking that on.

The built in speakers are garbage, again these can be upgraded if you really want, but then again it's a netbook, it generally lives on silent.

The keyboard is fantastic, i've not used a better one in a laptop/netbook yet, I can type on this thing faster than on a full sized one.

The screen is very bright and clear, and luckly doesn't come with that shiny covering that laptops seem to favour these days, so you can use it without having to shift around without the light reflecting off it.

The trackpad seems a little small when you first get it, but turn off horizontal scrolling and turn on the thing where you can flick the cursor and it keeps going once you've lifted your finger off, and it's very usable. Just takes some getting used to, I never have a problem with it now.

Apparantly you can upgrade to 2gb of ram, but it dents the battery life so I havn't done it, and it runs photoshop and dreamweaver side by side with no trouble. (Only working with upto 10mb .psd files, but then again it's a netbook.)

You can also upgrade to an SSD, which aparantly works very well, much faster boot times and the battery life is improved. Also makes it slightly quieter.

Hope I've helped! I'll be sticking with the NC10 just for the keyboard, it really is a godsend, and I don't mind modding it if I have to. (No need to so far though. I really do fancy an SSD and an W7 install though.)

Well, that's what I call - "REAL HELP" :-D Thanks mate...

Will wait a bit for info of other netbooks and will see about all options...

No problem mate, just thought I'd also add, I take it to Uni every day, one day it's 10-6 never runs down past about 30-40%.

It's been dropped in my bag and bashed about a couple of times, once very badly and it's never missed a beat, very very durable.

Also, it comes with a recovery partition, so you can reinstall Windows if you need to, and it also has a C and D parition, so what I've done is to make ISOs of all of the software I have on disc, and move them across to the D partition. Sounds a bit long winded, but say I'm away for a week and it gets corrupted and i need to reinstall windows, I can do that from the recovery partition, then I can install all my software again using the ISOs from the D partition.

EDIT: And there are official drivers and guides for how to put W7 on it out now.

EDIT2: oooh, and bear in mind that most netbooks with W7 come with W7 Starter, which I hear is pretty horrid. You can't use Aero, you can't change the desktop wallpaper and there are bound to be some other restrictions. I'd upgrade it to a proper version of W7 anyway, which they'll charge you £70 for, so you'd be better off just getting the netbook you want and disregarding the OS if you ask me! (If you particularly want 7 that is).

Im still in the same quandry as you, Im leaning towards the Toshiba NB200 (I wrote the wrong name in an earlier post.

9 hour battery life
big mouse pad
decent keyboard (isolated keys)
£50 cashback from Toshiba for November too:)

I am an ex NC10 user by the way - it was a bloody good netbook - fairly faultless, I will say the battery life if now lacking compared to the latest netbooks.

i waiting for the next range of notebooks with with win7 and 2gig ram, i had a nc10 for a while and loved it, but buying now seems silly unless its vital, i want one to come with a better spec and win7, rather than having to upgrade the memory and the os when i buy it

Costs less than £20 delivered for the card and antenna.

I paid about £220 or so for my NC10, £13 or so for the wireless n card, just under £20 for the ram and £45 for a Windows 7 license. So yeah while it does add up, I certainly wouldn't mind doing it again if the netbook cost like £150 to start with.

lol and another who's in the same situation, i need it for ms office, internet music and maybe a little programming (nothing too intensive as i've got a desktop for that). What matters to me is battery life. So far i'm leaning towards the 1008ha would this be a wise choice?

I am waiting for a decent nvidia tegra based netbook to emerge. Very long battery life and fanless. All I want to do is sofa surf and stream vid to me telly via hdmi (not wirelessly).
