Ok people, these are the options:

Current shape vauxhall corsa
Current shape peugeot 206
Current shape renault clio
Current or previous shape fiat punto

Im looking for a first car that will take me through uni, so we are talking atleast 4 years here. Want something that is good to drive and has a decent quality interior as some of them are dire.

Just want to know which one out of the 4 you would pick, reccomend particular models of each if you can, but overall just picking one of the 4 would be helpful.

There are only these 4 options on the table at the moment, im trying to get others but im not paying, the parents are ( :D 18th b'day present) so I dont have huge amounts of room to argue with the cars the have offered.

So which would you have and why?

Can I say 'none of the above' and recommend a Fiesta, Focus, Micra, Yaris or Polo instead?

Cos they are... better, innit. I don't really understand how they can be the only options? You are not doing the daft thing of only chosing what the closest car dealer to you has in stock, right?

Personally, I'd be after a Focus 1.6 Zetec 3 door if I wanted a small car. Better than anything in that list.

If it HAS to be that list, then Clio.

NOT Corsa, even if its £10. Well, maybe if its £10.

Peugeot are replacing the 206 pretty soon i'd imagine, so you could get a damn nice one for less.

edit...try pushing for a Yaris. Sure they're a bit girly, but cracking cars.

From that list, the Clio but there's not much in it. Make sure you get at least the 1.4 if you need it for more than 'popping to the shops'.

Edit: Agreeing with Fox, I'd be looking at the new Fiesta. As small cars go, they're really quite nice IMO. Far better than any of the cars in your list. I'm assuming from the current choices that your parents will veto the idea of a Focus.

Clio followed by the 206.

The Corsa is pretty much terrible to drive and the Punto isn't supposed to be too inspiring. And its a Fiat. It might not be true about them, but the reliability reputation would still put me off.

None of them will have fantastic interiors tbh, but the Pug and the Clios aren't too bad. Quite good fun to chuck about too.

Cheers guys

Fox, those are the only options at the moment because my dads paying and they are what hes suggesting, He thinks a focus is too big for a first car....which we all know is a load of testicles, and that they are the best options when your looking for a car around that size.

I agree, I would like to add the focus and fiesta to the list myself and will certinally go and see/drive some, the micra and yaris im not a fan of but the polo is something I hadn't thought about.

The clio seems to be winning so far, and I think the punto is going to be first off the list. (its the one I would have put at the bottom anyway)

Keep em coming

Im with you guys, I would quite like a fiesta or a focus, but yer as you guessed the focus is "too big" and the fiesta is aparently too expensive for what it is as its a ford......before you comment on that one ....dont worry I intend to show them the truth.

Get them to take a test drive. The Mk6 Fiesta is worlds apart from the Mk5 - very solid, good to drive, relatively handsome and mature little car.

Just to let you know, the Focus is 35cm longer and 5 cm wider then the 206. Nothing for a car really, never had any problems with it being any larger then your average small car. My parents were the same, just tell them you want a Mondeo. Then when they go "OMG no" you say "ok then, instead i would like a Focus." They will be so releived its smaller they will be fine about it.

The Focus is good to drive, dont feel bigger then the 206 i use to drive (mums). The steering feedback is so much better then the 206's, you can feel when you are losing grip. Try and go for the 1.6 Zetec with Climate Pack. Insurance on the Focus is £1500 for fully comp. I took it out when i was 17 with 0NCB and pass plus.

Clio....

Vauxhall corsa - Horrid to drive
Peugeot 206 - Interior sucks looks really cheap
Renault clio - Expect one or two dealer fix issues
Current or previous shape fiat punto - Fix it Again Tomorrow, wouldn't even be on my list.

I had a brand new 06 Fiesta as I hire car for a week.

Seemed well made, however not as nice as the 2001 model (Forget the mk)

I'd slit my wrists If I had to drive it every day though. Driving it 160 miles to the office, was not fun.

Its a town car, and nothing more.

The 206 also has a small pedal box area.

Get an older shape 1.2 zetec engine fiesta (as above, the 01 model). We used to have them as runabouts at work (along with focus, civics, fiats of all shapes etc etc) and they were nippy little cars, good on juice and nice to drive. Should be cheap to insure, they are reliable, cheap on parts, and better than any of the cars you mention, though it seems the Clio is rated quite highly.

Steer away from italian/french cars. They are generally crap with regards build quality, though some are decent to drive. That's no good when you're stuck on the hard shoulder waiting for the AA to arrive, mind.

Please, do not get a corsa, even if it is the current shape. French cars are generally to be avoided if you really want a good interior.

I'd recommend Yaris or Fiesta really for a small car.

In my opinion i'd skip the small car alltogether, i learnt to drive in a Ford Galaxy with no issues whatsoever. Other than insurance and maybe fuel, there is no reason why a bigger car is difficult to drive. Although parking my Jag in the uni multi-storey is a bit of a challenge..
