Which of the following....

Thanks for all the input everyone.

Im gonna try to convince the parents to amend the list to the following:
Old shape focus
pre 2006 fiesta
current shape clio
current shape 206
current shape corsa

The punto is getting removed completley, the corsa and the 206 are still options but not as favourable as the first 3.

So hopefully If we go look at some clios and 206's, I can chip in the fiesta and the focus and sing their praises on a test drive, then they might accept them a little more.

For definate though, my personal first choice would be a focus followed by a fiesta, shame that they have not offered either of those to begin with.

Why the pre-2006 Fiesta? I've been in an '05 reg TDCI and it's awful inside - nasty, cheap and plasticy. The 2006 Fiesta is said to be a lot better

I'd drop the 206 personally but it's up to you :)

I'd personally ask if I could have an older, slightly larger car in a higher class, rather than a new or nearly new econobox.

An older/larger car will be safer, have more toys, and will likely be quicker and more refined.

If I had to pick one of those - it would probably have to be the Clio, but I'd always be wishing I had an older and better car.

My first car was a Mk4 Astra & I learnt to drive in one. I did appreciate the extra size - we went for the Astra over the Focus as it's cheaper to buy used :) Group 4 insurance too so cheap to insure

Id go with this, if your cant, then test drive every little car out there, including the corsa, you never know, you might like it the most, i know my mum did. Maybe you might have the same taste as a 50 year old woman and not like the 20 something year olds of this forum ;) :p

I understand that, and I totally agree with it to be honest.

The bigges I could get would be astra/focus size really.

I dont really like the interior of the astra, although its cheaper than the focus, the focus appeals to me more, just seems a higher quality car.

Ideally I think my first choice would be a focus, im going to push for that, but im going to have a hell of a job convincing the parents its a reasonable first car (which I more than beleive it is to be honest)

They have the old image that a first car must be a tiny little thing with a 1.0litre engine, a tape player and wind up windows

Anyone got any clever ways for me to present the agrument?

I got a focus when I was 19 and they make the best first car imo they're a decent size and its no more difficult to park than a saxo I had (which was a horrible car :p ) The 1.6 engine is perfect as well its powerful enough so you won't get bored but not powerful enough for you to get into serious trouble. The interior is a bit funky but you get used to it after a while. Personally I'd get a 5 door one, you'll have more choice and its a lot easier if your giving people lifts. I'd explain to your parents that your just after a decent car and you not into racing or anything if thats what there worried about and if you where you'd hardly choose a focus which is a car driven by middle aged women. My focus does seem to a petrol addiction its probably mostly to do with how I drive though :D IIRC the 1.6 focus is group 5 or 6 so insurance shouldn't be too bad.

I should clarify my earlier post - I'm paying for the replacement (and I paid for the original) but my parents aren't happy with me getting a fast car at the moment :)

Its your money, surely its your choice and with respect a 1.6 Focus is hardly fast :)

I couldn't be doing with parents that would be so fussy, luckily Dads first reaction at my announcement I wanted to get a 530i next was one of dissapointed I wasn't going for a 540i :)

I know :)

You're lucky to have parents like that - I mentioned a 2.6 Audi A4 and it didn't go down well at all

Can't really blame them though as I haven't really done much to support my case that I can handle a more powerful car when I wrote off my own car. Dad says what makes you think that you can handle a fast car when you couldn't handle a 1.4? He also asks why I want a faster car - I think he thinks that I drive too agressively as it is and a faster car will only make it worse :)

Then you need to stand up to your parents, if its your own money buy the car without informing them etc etc.

tell them you've decided to take your CBT and then you're gonna hop onto a 125CC bike instead of driving a car, because of fuel and insurance costs.

They'll let you have a Focus then.

Thats not a bad idea at all! :p

I think when we go to the dealer, I will sit in every sing car and say oh no this is rubbish, this is awful, dont like this one, this is bad, what a horrible car, then get in the focus....now this ones actually quite good.

Just got to gradually sway them.

It will happen, might just take a while. :o

You'd have to play that carefully - it might back fire horribly!
