Which of your high-end hardware has lasted the longest?

Motherboard then CPU then RAM. Platform change is expensive.

Once you max out in socket upgrade I reckon you stick for the longest time. Doesn’t matter if someone upgrades every 6months/2yrs or 10yrs. It is more likely the GPU and other components will be changed more often than those ones.

Good cases stand the test of time. I had an Antec P180 as a PC case that then became a server for about a decade and finally housed a few GFX card for mining. It must be 15 years old but is now just gathering dust admittedly.
Ooh my old case was an Antec 900 I bought in 2012, and aside from no cable management and no AIO support it's still an absolute unit. The airflow in that case is incredible, but I replaced it because I wanted to go down the AIO route. It's now serving our friend as we gave them a gaming setup using various parts we had - including the Antec.

Good speaker systems also don’t really age. Moore’s law does not apply here.

My Logitech z-5500 DTS 5.1 is an absolute unit and still sounds great today. I think I bought it in 2007.

Can you upgrade that to a 2990?
I could (pretty sure my board supports it with a BIOS upgrade) - but I think I'd probably need more RAM to justify that many cores, currently got 8 sticks of 8GB and I'd really want to upgrade to 128GB for a 32 core.

Probably not worth it on such an old platform, I'd be better putting the money towards a new system.

GTX 680's, both Zotac cards and both outlasted their relevant use time. I only upgraded in 2018 and i bought them in 2012, they were truly work horses.

My D5 pump, bought in 2011, still working till this day .

I had an 8 port 10/100 network adaptor Switch that was quite expensive and high end when I bought it from Jungle.com in about '98.
I kept it in use for secondary devices until I finally replaced it with a 16 port managed gigabit switch in 2015, it was still working well when I retired it although one of the ports had died.

Other than that my current PC (CPU/memory/motherboard) is now nearly 7 years old but was specced at the higher end when I bought it with the ram maxed out (I remember people querying why I was fitting 32gb of ram - it was cheap and i'd been burned repeatedly by ram prices increasing massively by the time I needed more).

What a great thread! I can't think of many electronic parts that have outlived their expected lifespan but cases now....there's a thing I have about cases. I still have the Antec Skeleton I created a build log on and actually considered getting it out of the loft last week as I have a spare MB etc. that would go beautifully in it. I painted the Skeleton red and have an ROG MB with red RAM that would suit it perfectly! My build thread was in 2011 and I'd had it for a while I think.
