Well from looking into things more I have now narrowed it down a choice between these two panels:-

Once again it will be in a main room, which is normally lit and therefor its rare movies are watched in complete darkness but it does happen from time to time. People watching the screen will no be watching it from dead on but from all angles which is where an LCD could be a weakness.

Again it will be used for the integrated freeview, Xbox360 via component and an HD-DVD player will be purchased for the Xbox360 too. Plus there will be a normal DVD player and VHS connected by SCART I believe. Speakers on the TV will only be used for Freeview television wheras proper 5.1 surround system is in place for movies.

So out of those two which would you buy for best picture quality in freeview, DVD's and HD-DVD's along with using the Xbox360 on too?

I am favouring the 42" Plasma at the moment because its bigger:D and will cost me approx £200 less. Plus I believe the plasmas don't suffer from poor viewing angles either and give better picture?
 
I have a 42" Pioneer plasma and a 27" Samsung LCD. You are right about the viewing angles with regards to the Plasma and LCD.

Also the blacks are better Plasma displays.

The one thing I would say is the Toshiba has better connectivity with the extra HDMI ports.
 
Plasma as a tech but not sure on the Samsung, they generally make bad plasmas.

Plasma will give you better reeview, better DVD + deeper blacks on HD-dvd, less smearing and smoother panning. Only downsides are potential screen burn and lower res for pc use.

LCD will give a sharper image on the 360 + higher res if you hook up a PC too it. Downsides are lower black levels, worse motion/smearing and freeview and other SD sources will look worse than plasma.

How much is the Samsung plasma (and why does it say 8ms, plasma doesnt measure it and in theory if you did measure it it would be under 4ms ?? )

Were doing a Christmas special on this Samsung now with it at just £699 +VAT. So needless to say I am definetely getting one. :D
 
The LCD has a contrast ratio of 3500:1, this is poor. Avoid it as the blacks will look completely artificial regardless of overall image quality.
 
plasma eveytime, but personally i'd look at the Pioneer GX60 or LG 42" ones. Thats more aesthetics than anything else tho - either way, ditch LCD, its poor with SD feeds (80% of TV usage at least...)

I think you have the wrong picture for the Toshiba 37WLT68? Thats the '66 version? the '68 has a better design and a nicer stand. :p


Do plasmas still suffer from screen burn? I mean playing 360 for a few hours everyday, I dont want my rev counter burned onto the screen :confused:

3500:1 is the dynamic contrast ratio which means nothing.

God knows what person at ocuk thought it was good idea to list that on the website instead of the real contrast ratio, because it's clearly dynamic and such a poor dynamic ratio compared to other tvs is likely to put people off, such as you. :p

All good lcd tvs have a static contrast ratio between 1000:1 and 1300:1 which is definatley not poor.

Not for a "few hours a day" they wont!
I've had a set displaying static imagines for 12+ hrs a day and there is NO SCREENBURN AT ALL on the set.

Absolute nonsense that comment!

HI there

I got the Samsung Plasma 42" that OcUK is selling extremely cheap about 2 weeks before Christmas.

It was a choice between that and the Toshiba 37" LCD.

All I can say is I am glad I got the Plasma. Freeview is a crisp and crystal clear picture. DVD's look amazing, watching revenge of the Sith on a 42" Plasma is a whole new experience as blacks are black even in a dark room.

After seeing the LCD's in action I actually don't know why people would ever consider an LCD over a Plasma.

For me the Plasma has the huge benefits:-
1. NO viewing angle issues. Can watch a plasma from any angle and the picture remains perfect.
2. 10,000:1 contrast true ratio on plasmas, this gives far better colours and deeper blacks.
3. The Plasma is 42" and size does matter!!
4. The price, I got mine at a stunning price and OcUK's price is such a bargain!
5. The panel looks great as its black and just looks a quality piece.
