which is faster a new:
HD4890 1024mb @ 850mhz/3900mhz clocks appx £199
or
HD4870x2 2048mb @ 750mhz/3600 clocks appx £299

an what is the recomended PSU needed ro run both these cards ?

Reason being is iam after upgrading my X1900XTX card an want the best bang for my bucks that`ll see me for a few years , as u can c i`ve skipped a few gens of Cards till now ..

i know there`s about a £100+ between em but i`d rather get the best card possible that`ll last me a few years/months/weeks more ..

ohh yeah iam running a Hiper 580w PSU

What board and what res? Reason I ask is that they 4890 is the fastest single card and overclocks like a demon and is not a million miles away in performance from a 4870x2 especially for the money so if you have a suitable xfire board I would get a 4890 now and pick up a cheap 2nd one later for a boost when needed.

But the 4870x2 is the fastest card of the two if you just want to not mess about and just buy one..........

Well youre definately going to need to change your PSU, Id look at a 600W for the 4890 or 700W for the 4870x2, Id get Bequiet, or maybe Corsair or Zalman or Coolermaster. Re the card choice it would depend on your resolution, if you game at more than 1920*1200 then go for the 4870x2, the extra RAM will help with the high res, if not just go with the 4890 where the faster clock/memory is prob of more importance
Edit: and if as Greebo says you go down the route of 4890 and possibly a 2nd later, look at an 850W PSU

i don`t realy game @ 1920x1200 res`s cause my X1900 card is kinda no quiet cutting it ..

i have a daul monitor stepup Dell24" an a Sony19" 1920x1200-1280x1024 for desktop use ,

i turn the other monitor off for most games any way ..

ohh yeah iam not realy after OC`ing the cards
