I need to choose my next course for my degree.

either:
Designing applications with Visual Basic

or

Object-oriented programming with Java

Which one is more future proof, least boring and or easier?!

So far all I've done is javascript (boring as hell to me)

Java.

Having said that, I realise it's mostly bias against VB, which is a language I dislike both in terms of features and syntax. There are a lot of jobs out there for VB.NET developers and they tend to pay well, so really you need to ask what it is you want to be doing.

Java, Java, Java. Hands down.

Also this "application" thing, you will probably get a shock and be coding in VBA using excel spreadsheets like I am doing now in my "scripting for applications" module, what cack, I am so bored.

Whereas the OO-java module I did was great fun last year, if you like / admire or want to learn something, java is infinitly more useful and better to know the VB hell..

Lots of banks use java apparantly, get some ridiclous money there if you want to sign your life away..

Java would be the best choice, imo.

Also, I really hope you're talking about VB.NET and not VB6.

If it's VB6 then don't touch it. It's poor excuse for a language although you can develop some cool stuff fairly quickly.

If it VB.NET I'd probably asked why they're not giving you the opportunity to use C# and just run a general .NET module which includes a grounding in OOD.

If you don't want to be a programmer choose visual basic

If you want to be a programmer choose Java

If you are a programmer do whatever you like.

Thanks for the good replies.

I just want an easy ride really as i do not want to be a programmer.
So why are you doing a degree that contains programming courses

If you don’t want to be a programmer or feel you're never going to need any programming experience then do VB. If you don't have an interest in programming Java will be a chore.

I don't understand this easy ride attitude. There is nothing wrong with being taxed and broadening your experience, it’s good for you. Why do you bother with education?

If you didn't like JS, you will hate Java.

VB won't be much better but you do get instant gratification in a sense when creating forms with buttons and shiny things.

Personally I would go for Java, since it will teach you much better programming fundamentals. May we ask what degree you are doing?

VB.NET as you might want to use ASP.NET at sometime so the skills would be transferable.

It's computing & Design.

All IT degrees I looked into have some sort of basic programming modules as part of them.

And as stated before I find programming very boring. So an easy ride would be the better option for me.

Take Java as it will stand you in good stead if you ever need to do any programming.

Oh and why take the easy option? Push yourself. That's what university is all about. I did C++ and Aaembly language during my degree and I didn't want to be a programmer even though I was good enough (top of my class at the time)

Just sayin'

Are these both OU modules? I only ask as I've done two modules with exactly the same names. If it is, then do the Java one. There's really no difference in the difficulty as they don't go particularly in-depth to Java, but it'll serve you better in the future. I also found the course material better in the Java than the VB one.

Java, without a doubt :).

On our "Introduction to Program Development" module we're being taught Java, and that assumes absolutely no prior experience, no VB no C no anything!
