which quad is best?

Difference is slight. i7 brings hyperthreading to the table and runs slightly faster clock for clock. It's also a lot hotter.

q9650 has a x9 multi which is less harsh to the motherboard than the q9550, which would want an fsb of 472 for 4ghz.

I suspect the answer is to push your current quad further, since I believe it is currently limited by your knowledge as much as anything else. Learn on this one, take it higher, then see if you still want to upgrade

thanks and yes my knowledge is limited! :-( but willing to learn!!
so are there any tutarials on here that would help me on my quest?
plus this board is a lot more advanced! and i would appreciate any help and do for the help thus far!

read the stickies at the top of the section

overclocking comes with practice

i noticed you have a p5q-e
i used to have that board, its so easy to clock - great to learn on

you will be limiting your clock with 8gb of ram also

I think it is something to do with the extra RAM putting more stress on the NB??

Or something along those lines!

this

i would personally keep what you have and do a bit of reading up
that way you might be able to get a good clock on your current chip

IF your fairly happy with the performance of your system right now and you just need a little bit more of a increase, I'm sure a Q9650 will be okay for you once overclocked.

If you want a very large boost and your willing to put more money down, look at either the i7 920 which can usually be clocked to 4GHz and from some benchmarks I've seen it's just as fast as the 8 core Mac Pro's. You could also look at the newly released P55 platform, the i5 750 is a very nice fast chip and offers similar performance to an i7 920. Depending on what P55 motherboard you went with and what features you need, you could upgrade to an i5 CPU for around £330.

The best thing to do if I were you is look at some Benchmarks here. You can then see for your self how much performance each chip delivers, I've found that i5 review quite good as there is a mixture of CPU's that were tested.

Google is failing me here, can you point at some of these benchmarks? Specifically for overclocked x58 i7 vs two stock i7 in a Macintosh?

I've been wondering for a long time how 4 @ 4ghz compares to 8 @ 2.66ghz, and all I've got is the former will kill it on single threaded applications

i7 920 looks really nice and so does i5 750, toooo many choices!
i will play with my board for now and give the i5/7 some thought, if not the 9650.

how's this for a shopping list asus p7p55d deluxe, Geil Ultra Series 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-17000 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit, i5 750. £402.97? any good

Heres a couple of Geekbench scores you could look at one is a stock 8 core Mac Pro and one is a Hackintosh running an i7 920 at 4GHz, both are running the same OS so realistically I think this is a fair comparison of the two different machine.

Mac Pro results here

i7 920 results here

installed 8gb ram now i cant get above 2.8ghz! spent two hours constantly playing with bios with now luck. all setting are bios standard every time i start to adjust setting from auto to known values system becomes unstable?
