Which Router?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if you could give me some advice about what router to buy. I live in a fairly old large house with think walls and the signal fails to reach most rooms. I think my current router is actually alright:

Obviously its not powerful enough to reach my living room which is about 15 meters away. Is there any routers out there that could do this? Is there something else that could be blocking the signal?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Kindest of Regards,

J

Hi JohnZe

Unfortunately wireless is rather susceptible to interference and often has trouble penetrating thick walls. You could always try a bigger antenna which might boost the signal. You can also get yourself an access point and try to connect that up to your wireless router so that it can give you a better signal in your room, although it is debatable as to how much this will improve things, if at all. You can get antennas that connect via a cable so that you can run this to a doorway or at least closer so that you get better line of sight. Just google "wireless antenna" and you should get some hits :)

There is nothing wrong with the router that you currently have. You just need to try and get the signal stronger. Can you attach an external antenna to your router, as it has two internal antennas?

I'm surprised it fails within 15 meters! How many walls does the signal have to go through? Have you tested with other WiFi devices? Also, have you tried repositioning/placing the router in a different area of the room or house?

I'ld look for one with an external aerial, that Lynksys only has 2db and you can get a 9db very cheaply or attempt to make one. What may also be worth a look is setting up a second access point on the other side of the house and bridge the gap with some cat5 or power line networking.

Adding another access point would seem like the most sensible thing. Only really need the internet in 2 rooms, the computer room and the living room, which are o9n opposite sides of the house.

How would I go a bout adding a second access point in the living room? Would this use the same bandwidth as my current connection?

Thanks Very Much!

Just come across this device that claims to send the internet connection through the electrical wires. Apparently you just plug it in to the wall by the router, then plug one in the wall in the living room which will transmit the signal.

Anyone know if this works? Also, what speed will I need to have a fast enough connection for online gaming?

Thanks all

I don't know 'how' it works but it does.

You plug one in near your router then run a Ethernet cable from the router into it. Anywhere else in your house you can plug in another then a cable from it to the device.

I think the age of your wiring has an effect on this, thou someone with more experince might be able to give you more info.
