I'm getting tempted by an upgrade to a 2080 Super. I really really want to wait for the 3000 series... but the temptation is there.

Seems I can sell my 1080 for up to £250 and we don't really know how far away the 3000 series really is.

My target was wait until Cyber Punk 2077 and see how the market looks.

Related question.

2070 Super vs 2080 Super. There's about £200 on average difference.

With the 2080 sandwiched oddly between them.

Regardless of budget I'd say overclock a 2070S then review the market when Cyberpunk releases. I doubt any of this generation's cards are going to ray trace at acceptable framerates.
I don't think the 2070S will depreciate as much and you'll likely have a larger target market to sell (Can't see that many people paying £450-500 for a used 2080S next year)

Yea. That's what I was thinking. With the high prices on the 2080(S) range will they hold their second hand value.

Also £200 price difference is very steep.

Smart money is 2070S. But I am only upgrading for the RTX. Is it capable?

From what I have seen briefly on Control with DLSS at 1400p it definitely can do it.

It's capable but you get more rtx cores on the 2080 so the 2080 will be better again. Don't rule out a high class 2080 as they will be as fast as a standard 2080 Super. My overclocked zotac extreme amp 2080 is faster than a standard 2080 Super. They are around £600 to £630

Is now the right time to bite the bullet tho.

Lets take Control for example. If I play the game at 1400p with out RTX on my 1080 it should be perfectly enjoyable at near ultra settings?

GEARS 5 seems worrying tho. It has a 2080 as an 'ideal' GPU.

You can get some nice deals on the 2080 but I set my target as Cyberpunk 2077/3000 series and I want to try to keep to that as possible.

I had the same GPU as you and whilst it was ok it was starting to show its age. yes it will work in Control but part of Controls greatness is its RTX implementation. its a real game changer in graphics. actually reminds me of the feeling when seeing mario on the N64 for the first time. Mario was a game changer at the time and control is similar from a graphics point of view. It would still be a good game without the RTX but the RTX does make a massive difference.

sell the 1080 for £250 to £275 and then the step up is not as bad. My thinking is that a good 2080 is likely to be worth around £350 to £400 when the new 3000 series cards come out so depending on whether they offer a massive jump i will either jump or stick with the 2080 for another gen to the 4000 cards

Well, the two who get their cards will be.

The 2080s only got 5x more Tensor Cores, so i can't really see them making that much of a difference.
