Which Sat Nav?

I'm just answering what the OP asked for!... :p

I've just got myself a Lumia 830 so will be using Here Maps, and passing my Garmin onto my mother in-law who has a Dumb Phone (so no Google Maps for her)

Anyone know if Lumia support Mirrorlink as I'm gonna be getting a new Fabia which has that built in rather than a dedicated SatNav/Media center :)

And cheers I saw the 2599 sat nav, if I don't get a response from Brodit then I'll just buy that. It ticks every box

I have a tomtom go 500 and its quite good, they have new models now. You get free traffic (via bluetooth tethering) and map updates. I think the live camera alerts are only around £20 for a couple of years again you need to mobile tether for this or just have the static cameras.

Day to day though i use my phone and google navigation although if the data connection is bad at the start of the journey I use the TomTom. Brodit car holders are awesome, there is nothing worse than your phone falling off the windscreen.

via Bluetooth? using your phone ?

mines a GO 6000, and its all inclusive in the unit, so its free for life (traffic and maps)

You can cache Google Maps on to a device these days, no need for a constant data connection other than for live traffic etc. Voice control possible with android. As is handsfree calling, as it is a phone...

Perhaps just battery life then?

You can cache an exceptionally small area with Google maps and even then it doesnt work with navigation as you have to have data to set a destination.

Phones are gimped until Google allow its entire maps to be downloaded to the device - until then dedicated devices are still the way forward.

Get Nokia HERE. Download any map, voice pack and use them completely offline. Including detoures if you take an wrong turn.

Sorry for the Hijack. I am looking for a sat nav for Christmas I was looking at the Garmin 2597 lmt-d or the 2699 lmt-d. Does anyone use these?

I have a nexus 5, my mother in law is wanting to get me a sat nav so i thought of those 2. I have used Garmin running gps devices for many years.

Another Waze vote, fantastic app and has pretty much retired my tomtom altogether. Its quite nice you can update maps yourself (within limits based on experience).

Good deals on Sygic at the moment which remains my favourite navigation app on my phone... despite it refusing to accept the existence of the Humber bridge the other week until I was about 300 yards from it :p

Another Waze user! though its bugs can be frustrating and its desire to re route you for the sake of saving ~5minutes of a 2 hour drive. and in my experience it routes you down random roads that are probably more busy but it doesn't have traffic data so thinks its better. (and in some instances ive ended up going down residential streets / single track country lane)
Its still better than anything else i've used mind, just more often than not its best to ignore its re-routes!

Route 66 Navigate running on android or iphone. It's basically the same software as you would get on a Tomtom Go 400, 500, 600, 5000 or 6000, minus a couple of features. The mapping, routing and traffic are the same.

Starts with a free trial (30 days I think) then it's either £15.99 for Europe or £11.99 for the uk for the app. 1 year's traffic is £11.49 for Europe or £7.49 for the UK. Speed cameras are the same price as traffic.

IMO, it's worth going with a Tomtom based system (including Route 66) over everything else because the traffic info is so much more detailed and accurate. Only Google comes close to this but Tomtom still manages to cover more roads.

With garmin / navigon / co-pilot the traffic doesn't cover anything less than B roads. Google covers down to B roads and a few side roads. Tomtom basically cover all roads if there is enough traffic on them.

The only real weakness with Tomtom is detection of actual road closures away from the Highways Agency's strategic road network can be hit-and-miss. Where local authorities supply them with info (e.g London) it's very good. Where they don't (Peak district for example) closure information relies on detection by their algorithm. Tomtom Go 5000 and 6000 rely on a Vodafone 2G modem so live info can be patchy in arereas with poor (or saturated) Vodafone 2G coverage. Tomtom's using a bluetooth connection to smartphone (or phone apps) give a more reliable connection.

The Inrix traffic app probably has the best info on local roadworks and closures but it's not a full navigation app.

I'm also looking for a sat nav for the Mrs to use in her car. No point in suggesting phones/apps etc as she is a complete technophobe when it comes to phones :) Just a stand alone that tells her how to get from A - B with perhaps live traffic in case of accidents etc, no need for speed camera info cos she has a built in limiter. Looking to spend about £100 as anything else I think will be wasted on her!

TomTom Start 25 on the rainforest for £100. Lifetime maps, good software and a 5" screen.
