Which screen? (24")

I'm in the market for a new screen and i've been holding off now for absolutely ages (months & months) as i haven't been convinced as to what to get or waiting for the next big thing around the corner.

I'm willing to spend money on a decent screen and i've shortlisted these:

- Dell 2407wfp (obvious choice)
- Dell 2707wfp (possibly if the price comes down)
- BenQ FP241W (better than the Dell but is it worth the extra money?)
- Benq FP241WZ (is the BFI feature actually useful and is the extra cost justified?)
- Eizo S2411W (quality but expensive - alternative suggestion)
- Eizo S2110W (quality but expensive - alternative suggestion)

I've read up on the above monitors but i'm still not 100% convinced as to which one to go for!

Since i've waited so long i can wait a little longer if need be and i've spotted these two potential deal busters on the horizon:

- Samsung 245T (seen the initial reviews & video - looks impressive)
- NEC LCD2470WNX (my brother has the 20" version - if that was replicated in the 24" version, fantastic)

So, the question is - do i go for a screen thats already available on the market and if so which one? and/or - If i wait for the above 2 models to be released, does anyone have an idea about their respective release dates?

I was hoping to get one for my birthday next week but if i'm better off to wait a little longer then so be it.

I tend to use my computer for gaming/web design/photoshop/CAD/internet/general.

Thanks

I've been looking for a decent 24" screen for ages too. Like you I kept waiting for the next thing to come out (mainly due to bugs in the current displays - in particular problems displaying the 360 in 1:1 aspect).

Finally bought a BenQ FP241W a couple of months ago which was great except for the black out problems where the screen annoyingly blanks out for a few seconds (although there is a fix for this now - see the FP241WZ vs 2407WFP thread).

Returned that and was intending on getting a FP241WZ or possibly even waiting for the NEC 2690 to fall in price. Best screen at the moment appears to be the NEC imo, plus I have always been impressed by the quality of NEC displays. I expect the NEC 2470 will be very good when it is out.

As for the Eizo 24", it is meant to be great but was about £750 when I looked for a screen based on an old panel (same 16ms one as the Dell 2405?). I expect a new Eizo will be released soon. Fantastic screens for graphics work though so maybe worth the £££ if you are into your photoshop/CAD work.

In the end I ordered a Dell 2407 last week since it was just £407 and the latest A04 revision has no significant problems. I think the BenQ is a great screen but I doubt it is worth an extra £200+, hopefully I won't be disappointed with the Dell. I'll let you know at the weekend.

Thanks for the reply RichL - it would be great if you could report back and let us know how you get on. At the minute I'd probably lean towards the BenQ W (£560), it’ll be interesting to see how you find the Dell in comparison as you’re in a prime position to give your opinion, having owned both screens.

The NEC2690 looks really impressive but the price tag is just too much. I agree that the NEC2470 looks like the screen to maybe hold out for but does anyone have an estimated release date? TFT Central report that it'll be released April 2007 but these dates I find tend not to be very accurate (BenQ  )

I think the Samsung looks impressive as well with some new technology being incorporated, which could potentially raise the bar with tft’s. Although I’d imagine that a release date could be even further away – does anyone have an idea on its release date?

I think if I received some hard facts relating to release dates I think I’d hold back but I don’t really want to be asking the same question in a couple of months time having seen new screens come and gone.

Thanks for the heads up on Viewsonic's new tft, i was aware that they were due to release a 24" screen - however i'm not the greatest fan of its styling, so i might give it a miss unless it turns out to be the next big thing of course ;) .

I've just spotted that the NEC 2470WNX is available (in stock) in Canada ($969.99 CAD), so i assume its only a matter of time before they'll be available over here.

TFT Central have just reported that NEC are releasing a new range of monitors, which includes two 24" versions.

Check out the link:

Good news - if its available in Japan on 28th April then hopefully Europe won't be too far behind.

Bloomin heck the 24" model has 4 dvi connections with HDCP :) , i think this could be the monitor i have been waiting for to connect my 360, ps3 and Vista PC. Can't wait for some reviews :D

Top model may be nice but, looking at the proposed dollar price, I think it's going to be the thick end of a grand when it's released here, which is a hell of a premium over something like a 2407.

2407fpw ***!

had 24" dell for about a week or so and all i can say is, its fab, I got it at a stupid price too on said maker'ssite which was there for 24 hrs or something, rev AO4 1:1 on 360 is very good and looks excellent with no ghosting, and Batman Begins on HDDVD is stunning. Also borrowed the office PS3 for this weekend (As for the ps3, never really used it, weather was too nice!!!! ) tho i was blown away by Black Hawk Down at 1080p on the monitor, (using hdmi-dvi cable from J.L) if you can find it for the sub 500 mark, I would go for the dell if you can find one that is definitely ver 4. :-)

I think a good benchmark to make is the NEC LCD2690WUXi 26" that is already available, at a cost of £915 I'd imagine that the new 24" releases would be, as Booner suggested around the £650-£750 mark.

Yes, its still going to be more expensive than the Dell but if its anything similar to the LCD20WGX2, then I'd bet it'll be a huge hit as the the 20" version is arguably the best on the market of its screen size.

Lovely screen.

Only problem is the lack of HDMI direct input, which the viewsonic boasts! lets just hope it is worth the wait, cause i would shoot myself in the foot if i bought that NEC and the viewsonic was the "next big thing" :)

ERM

but what is so great about hdmi? apart from audio, or unless its Hdmi 1.3. i mean it does the same as DVi dunnit? Unless of course you need every single input. :D

NEC have released news regarding the NEC MultiSync® LCD2470WNX on their UK site:

http://www.nec-display-solutions.co...alm=Home__Details,spec=x__uk__en,docId=269060

An Extract - "The NEC MultiSync® LCD2470WNX will be in stores from the end of April 2007."

Looks like we may not have to wait much longer, hopefully OCuK will get them in stock soon. I was reading over on HardForums and this monitor has already been released & available over in the US/Canada.

Is your name appropriate?! :p

Seeing as the Dell lacks speakers, I don't see an issue with the lack of HDMI. It has a HDCP compatible DVI connection so just get a HDMI to DVI cable and you're sorted.

Wait a minute - HDMI output ? That's a different kettle of fish entirely...

Cripes the amount of specs u lot want from a monitor is unreal, i never realised people wanted that much from a screen. Can you not just get a tv with hdmi and use the monitor for the pc? Sounds like you want a jack of all trades type affair when really wouldnt you be better getting 2 seperate screens?
