Which Sim City Version?

Not even close to SC4 IMO.

Last I read I thought the developer had stopped all input into Cities XL, has that changed?

Yep, they have given up on Cities XL and are making a sequel. I wouldn't hold you breathe though, their track record not that good.

I loaded Sim-City 4 up last night for the first time in years!

Cheers.

I did the same. Forgotten how much DLC I had taken from Simtroplois.

I'd be happy to keep playing SC4 for years, would just like some graphic updates, improved transport/road options and some economy work. Why Monte Cristo didn't do that when making CXL is beyond me.

i played it just the other day

Only issues i have is game resolution, you will have to add a custom res to the start-up on the short cut or just play in a dodgy non screen res.

I tried mine in 1650x1080 and had some nasty flickering - so ended up playing 1600x1200 hardly noticed a difference after 30 mins got used to it.

Had a few very random out of the blue CTDs as well so make sure you save often if you remember !!!

I've had problems with newer nvidia drivers, but when reverting to older ones it's fine again ( the flickering etc). As I refuse to play on anything else than 1920x1080...

The game is stable if you disable all but 1 thread for sc4, you can do it manually each time in the task manager but you can also add -CPUCount:1 to the shortcut.

So basically I use
Patched game
Older drivers ( nv 190.62 are fine).
and these in my shortcut: -Intro:off -CPUCount:1 -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -f

And the game is solid, not had a crash at all even after hours and hours of gameplay... ( win7 x64, 6gb, gtx260 216sp, q6700 3.2ghz)

Sim City 2000 Deluxe is blatantly the best of the lot. comes built in with the SCURK and tileset editor... sublime...

Any stuff in particular you'd recommend? I don't think Simtropolis is very beginner friendly when it comes to explaining modding SC4.

This reply goes out to the both of you! :D

First thing to download is the latest “Nam Net work mod”, which vastly improves roads. Adds all sorts of options which make the game much better to play. There are other great fixes (sliders for the Opera house, private schools, mods to block Maxis lot growing etc). Can’t recall them all. Can list if you are interested.

As for content its best to search my name. The best people are Simgoober, HK project (Bixel lists them), NDEX (Various people list items) and Pegasus (Also at www.simpeg.com). There loads of decent UK stuff listed my ITS …… can’t recall off hand  There also loads of other excellent pieces but searching really crap, can list more if you want.

You need to be careful with dependencies. The people listed generally have very few. Some random content might have loads and require you to download a huge number of other items just to get the one you really wanted.

Generally if an item has lots of dependencies I wouldn't bother downloading it. Once you have downloaded a few items (see note below), go to a random map and “plop” all the lots you just downloaded to make sure they work.

Note: I think Simtropolis limits download since I always seem to get zero progress on downloads after a time.

Why Monte Cristo didn't do that when making CXL is beyond me.

Let's not go there!!! :p

Just ordered sim city 4 deluxe as it was only £6, can't wait to play it as i used to love these sort of games. :)

Looking to prepare for it by downloading some good stuff, though im still a bit unsure what to get, im not worried about getting loads of stuff just want the top 10 addons or any big packs to start with?

Just to add my 2 cents:

Honestly, I'd say SC3000, it's simply the best... decent enough graphics, "easy" enough game play...quite user friendly. You can dive straight into it.

I always find, although I have a decent computer that with SC4 that once my city reaches around 100k pop that I start experiencing reallllll issues, haha. Game just slows down to a crawlll, really. And also, no matter what I do they never use my highways... the slackers.

Go for SC3000. It's just a lot more fun to play. That being said though, don't let me detract from SC4, I've been playing it a lot recently and I still find it highly enjoyable :D

Thanks, will check them out, if there's also any small stuff worth getting, like nice buildings etc let us know as i may get them later on.

Oh yeah just saw that NAM has been updated, as well as RHW and it looks like theres a new one out "Network Widening Mod (NWM)", though im new to sc4 and its mods so i don't know much about this lot, just thought id mention it. :)
