these two drives use the same platters, only the 1TB has an extra platter. For sustained transfers, they should be pretty darn similar, but the extra buffer on the 1TB will make for higher burst rates.

The 1TB is the drive to go for, but the 640 will be the fastest 7200 <1TB drive, much better than the 750 :)

Both are a good choice :D

actually the 640gb will likely be slightly faster due to not having to read from 3 platters, just 2, like the 74gb raptor 16mb was faster for the majority of things than the 150gb version. So if you dont need 1tb buy the 640gb. Or wait for the 320gb version if you need less storage.

some how i thought there would be diff opinions as to what 1 is the fastest , just tempted to get the 1tb while it is on offer,,but having said that i am sure it will only fall in price .

well £58 for 640gb version is rather cheap, not worth £35 more the the 1tb unless you need loads of storage.

i'll buy 2 * 320gb's for raid0, already got 2*750gb's for storage which are full:(

Been there done that with raid as a boot setup,,and not going back to it as i have lost to much information in the past this way :eek:

For me the 640gb is £63.44 inc VAT , not £58 , or was that at another site m8

Quite the opposite. The Samsung 1TB is about to go short in stock and the quoted prices are already increasing. After the TWO offer has finished we will be increasing our pricing to around £100 inc. VAT and how long for is unknown.

At the end of the day, Samsung have no reason to be as cheap as they are apart from gaining market share but as the product is also winning the awards there is no reason for this. Everyone has probably noticed that the other vendors have stuck to their guns this time round and have not dropped their prices anywhere near as low. Seagate are still hovering around just over the £100 + VAT as are WD and Hitachi. The shortages are a great time for Samsung to increase their pricing again as even if they shoot to £90 +VAT, they'll still be around £10 per drive cheaper than any other vendor.

I think for me the 1tb would be best suited due to the following :
1 : dont really want to go raid , as when it goes bad , it goes bad
2 : really could do with the space , and it never ceases to amaze me just how fast a 300+ gb drive can get full:D:D
3 : the 1tb sounds like a really fast drive

BUT,, now that the 640gb is comming on the market,, it sure will be sods law that as soon as i get the 1tb , the 640 gets released and proves to be a much better performer

hmmm decisions , decisions

I used 2 x SpinPoint F1 1TB (2TB in total) cos I have lots of games - 2 of my games are much big files size... seem good price to grab... it has 3 plattter which is 334mb x 3 also all F1 model is SATA-II by default as there is no pin block to put for using SATA-I - only need to download the software to switch back to SATA-I.

Do you think that is the best way , to have the OS installed on the 74gig raptor , and then use the F1 1tg for game instalations / backups / downloads etc.

As that is the way i was thinking of doing it, but worried incase the new f1 would be much faster to use as a boot drive,, but then you have the problem that if it fails as a boot drive , you could face to loose lots of information.

I use the raptor because it had faster seek times than the F1 and thus feels snapier than the F1. Boot times are already very quick so i'm not overly concerned.

Think i will do the same ,, and use my 2nd raptor to act as an image for my 1st raptor that will have my OS installed on it. , that way of my boot raptor fails , hopefully i should have a backup image on my 2nd raptor 1 can use to restore.

Why not set the Raptors up in Raid 1 then?

Actually the 1Tb is cheaper £/gb, so a pretty good option! - But only for this week - so better hurry ;)

I have found the drive an amazing purchase, quiet, runs amazing on Arch with samba as a fileserver. Couldn't have asked for a better drive.

Quiet too!

dont think you read my post, its cheaper than the 1tb, thats a fact, didnt say per gb as most ppl dont need more than 640gb, hence the end of the post saying unless you need 1TB:P
