My 500Gb drive has about 20 GB left so I need a solution fast.

Looking at getting a 1TB drive with the option to buy a second and run in RAID 1 in the next couple of weeks. Looking for speed really as I'll be downloading compressed archives onto them and then unzipping. Sizes will range from 1 GB to 50GB for the archives.

Or would a couple of 750GB drives give better bang/buck?

Wouldn't you be better off buying a couple of smaller drives for the OS say 160Gig and runing them in RAID for redundancy/backup,
then have one or two 1TB drives for storage, the smaller drives would give you quicker access time on the OS where as access time for archive wouldn't be so critical.

Just thought, what about 2xWD6400AAKS and run them in RAID 0 for the time being. Then when I've saved some dosh and I've sold the rest of my raptors buy two more and run RAID 10. That'll give me 1.2 TB for everything (OS, Apps, Data) with it being backed up on the mirror. I should get good performance from this shouldn't I?

Or stick with getting one or two Sammy F1's as my OS/Apps drive?

the samsung F1 750 GB look pretty good value

toying with getting a couple myself...
seem to be a fair bit cheaper than the other 750s

will have to look into raid and see if i can start off with a couple of drives that i can then add more to without rebuilding the array and shifting files around

are you impressed with them just realised they were marginally cheaper although you do sacrifice 110GB

iv had a WD5000AAKS for the last year which im happy with so may join you and stick with WD

i havent looked at pc parts much of late what was your reasoning for the WD6400 over the samsung 750s

TIA

Very happy with them mate, they are quick, quiet and have the normal sublime WD warranty which did it for me.

Here is my setup.

2 x Seagate 250gb 7000.10 single platter drives in raid 0 for OS
1 x Samsung F1 1TB for storage
1 x 74 gb Raptor for Page File only
1 x 80 gb Maxtor stores compressed OS drive image

Soon I will get an external eSATA 1TB external to back up my stuff on the sammy I think.
