Please help me decide.. I am looking for a 2 bay Synology drive, but cant decide whether to get the 'J', '+' or 'Play' version..

It will be use mainly to serve files for Media Centres (Using Kodi, so no transcoding required at this stage), storing photos, as well as doing some of the server tasks my 24/7 PC is currently doing (Sabnzbd, SickRage, backups, etc)..

The starting point should be the 'J' series I guess, as it is the cheaper out of the 3, but will I regret not going for the faster '+', or 'Play'? Will the 'J' be able to perform the tasks mentioned above? Is the 'J' able to transcode anything? (Say if I wanted to use Plex in the future)..

Personally I don't see the point in transcoding. I'd just buy devices that can hardware decode the files I'm sending them.

The bigger question is 2 bay or 4 bay..

With a 2bay, you're saying 'no' to future expansion.

I'd consider the DS414J. If you want Hotswap, DS414 or DS416

I'd tend to go for a 4 bay NAS. I've got the DS414 and it's great.

Only wish is that I'd got the 'play' version as it will run a plex server. As it stands all my video content is hosted on the NAS and my PC runs plex when I want it to.

My NAS also:

Runs a web proxy server to OpenDNS as part of a security thing for the kids web browsing
Backs up to an external USB drive and Amazon Glacier
Nice and quiet as well
