which to choose: Anthem or Battlefield V?

As much as I dont like to be negative, I'm with TonyT on this, even though it pains me given how I've been a stalwart of the Battlefield series ever since the original (and best imo) BF1942.

Likewise. I'm a BF player thru and thru, feels like I've been playing them for 25 years, thousands and thousands of hours. But each year with each release the game goes from bad to worse, each time moving further away from what I call a BF game. It's just a casual kiddie shooter now made by a team that's completely lost sight of what made BF the genre leader for all those early years.

Amazes me how they can't figure out what the winning formula was back in the glory days, it's so flipping simple.

Can you elaborate on this a bit more? Casual kiddie shooter in which sense, and what is different about BF:V's gameplay, that has been lost from previous ones?

Neither but if I had to choose it would be Anthem 100%, since I have experience of the ****show abortion that is BFV.

Crutch mechanics to assist new players in getting easy cheese kills.
An auto-balancer and in round catch-up mechanic that severely punishes a good squad (not so bad if you're good and playing in a random squad, but get 4 good players in a squad, and your team will be padded with potatoes unless the other team has a good squad as well.)
Weapon/vehicle specialisations (upgrades) which mean a gun or vehicle you've not used before is objectively weaker compared to an upgraded gun, which for me is bordering RPG territory. (I strongly believe kit should be a level playing field, and practice and skill should be the differential).
Increasing emphasis on visuals rather than smooth gameplay and predictable net code.
Increases in player animations when performing certain tasks or vaulting, which you end up getting locked into.
Maps where in places you can smoothly run, vault and slide and in others you get stuck trying to walk up a slight incline with a pebble in your way.

To name a few..

Save your money and download Apex :D

And reading your original post I would try and find Witcher 3 + DLC as cheap as you can and enjoy one of the best RPG games released in the last 10 years.

Having spent a whole day looking into it, Anthem has actually grown on me a lot and I think i'm going to go for that. Don't know if I'd pay full for price for it mind, not without seeing how it did at launch, but since it's free I think it looks pretty fun.

Apex looks great too - I'm definitely going to try it. Looks right up my alley.

Anthem isn't even out yet, though lots have played a small demo (with mixed results). With any luck the release version will be tweaked/fixed a fair bit and the game will be much slicker. It has potential. BF V is pretty much the same old FPS shooter you have seen 100 times. (Not that Anthem is especially original).

Tbh based on playing them both neither, the last good battlefeild game is 3 and 4,last true great one is bad company 2

Anthem beta was nothing special, I did play division 2 beta which was great imo

Seems like a lot of people didn't read the OP. "Save your money" or "Get X instead" aren't really relevant responses to "Which of these two free games should I pick?".

Both games have a 10 hour trial on Origin Access. So maybe the best way to choose is to give them both a go?

I own BF 5 and pretty much love it. I ignored all the haters / streamers followers etc.

I also have Anthem and looking forward to that. From a money perspective as BF5 can be bought so cheaply if it was me I would use it to redeem Anthem as that has a high retail price still.
