Hi peeps,

I am a total newb to the world of photography, I have a fuji S9600 and would like to get a tripod...

Dont know where to start...

Please advise

thanks

There are quite a few tripody threads - most people here seem to recommend "saving lots of money to buy a really good quality tripod first time round - or you'll end up buying two eventually."

However, that's exactly what I haven't done, having just bought a Velbon CX440 for £19.95, from a competitor. (I had some vouchers to spend!) It's super - and with the money I've saved, I think I'm going to go buy a remote shutter release and some ND filters. Woo!

Besides, perhaps in a year or two if I find myself using it all the time - I'll want a better tripod. At that point I'll give the Velbon to a lucky friend.

Careful of mentioning competitive stores. FF.

Edit: sorry! (see below) -bluecat

The Hama tripods that a certain high street retailer that likes to show it's goods via catalogues stock are great for tripod beginners or people with light cameras, I've still got my Star61 and use it for my flash gun.
They are light and sturdy, and cheap enough not to put too much of a frown on your face if you damage it.
They even have a hook at the bottom for you to hook a bag onto to add more weight for windy events.

Ah - whoops! Many apologies Dons, I always think of the place I mentioned as a place you go to buy furniture and kitchenware etc, rather than computer bits!

I just forked out the princely sum of £10.99 on a WT3570

It looks very like the hama ones, rebadged perhaps?

At a little over a tenner it will do till use it enough to justify something more expensive.

if you want something to last you thats robust and light get down your local photography store and have a look at some manfrotto's they have an awesome range from small light and portable to whopping studo beasts see what you like and what suites your budget

I think i will go with for the hama one with the free gadget bag...

see how I get on with that..

thanks for all your help peeps..

so i have the hama tripod now...

but it extends to only 115cm and thats quite a few cm from my body length...im 5ft 9"

Is there a height a tripod should measure in accordance to your body?

Its annoying having to bend to take my shot..

please advise this newb A.S.A.P

Cheers

as I am a newb and its my first tripod I kind of made a boo boo lol...

so when buying a tripod is the general rule that it should be as tall as you?

pls clarify?

The Hama I had (cheapest one I had seen) had a central column that could be raised about 30cm.

The one I currently have is unbranded and goes to about 140-145cm which is fine to use (I am 5'9-5'10).

It is a challenge to get one that will be exactly at your height your always gonna have to stoop a little, especially in the lightweight area. A big as studio tripod can easily be had for any size but there not too portable, but trying them for size is a good idea.

Trying to find a 'tall' Tripod is a bit of a nightmare, only one I could find that suited my needs was a Velbon Sherpa 450R which is not even a top-end thing but it's solid enough for me and does the job without me stooping :) Most Tripods seem to be designed around midgets :D
