Whining Noise from Engine Bay

So I took my car in for the CDV to be removed and for some other bits that needed doing. After collecting it, I noticed a whining noise coming from the engine bay. It gets louder and more noticeable under acceleration.

I took a couple of pictures and with help of a friend we determined that the noise was coming from the right hand side of the engine bay (intake side). Couldn't see anything immediately obvious though...

Any ideas?

id have a look at that plastic water flange, common issue on those

that filthy great blower left under the bonnet may have something to do with it too

lovely, is the setup intercooled? how many ponies does it make and do you like it?

Yep it is intercooled, there's a small front mount installed with a separate pump (liquid to air) - I'll grab a picture of that later on.

I'm still running it in so I haven't given it a proper boot yet (it's so tempting though!). Power delivery is silky smooth and the car picks up so much quicker.

When I'm happy it's running well and run in, I'm going to get it on a dyno. Based on others running a similar setup I'm expecting mid-high 300's.

I've not even turned on the radio since having it installed - just had the windows down and listened to the sound :D

the rest of the bmw fanboys on the board must be too busy in the toilet to post at the mo :D

does it still run the original ecu? and finally, whats the retail on one of those?

lol

Yes its the original ECU, but it's running a customised software map that's tuned to the kit and car. Retains all original functionality.

Only other functional changes made for this level of tune are bigger injectors. The SC comes attached to the new replacement intake manifold/fuel rail assembly.

As for cost, it's not cheap...

TS2 $6850 USD

at time of writing, so it depends on exchange rate and customs/VAT
+ fitting and setup at a reputable garage.

well if it puts you into the mid 300s and you like the car, then it cant be money badly spent.

ive no idea what your car looks like but i pray its a sleeper! there is a chance it could give V8 M3s a spot of bother in a straight line dash

What the.....

How much money and how much power?

I wondered what your reaction would be - I noticed your post about ESS in the other supercharged E46 thread :p

I'll have a definite power figure run once everything has settled down so I know for sure. Also contemplating a boost gauge somewhere like the center console 'sunglasses' compartment (I've seen you can get some fabricated gauge pods that fit straight in). I don't plan to sell the car anytime soon so I figured I'd do something interesting with it!

As for looks, it's mostly standard bar a few things: A different style exhaust with wider tips (stainless catback) and I recently changed the wheels for a set of these:

(modified to E46 offset in a standard silver colour) which fill the arches nicely - slightly lowered on Eibach Sportline springs.

Haven't decided what to do with the boot badge yet - replace with an ESS one, remove it or keep it as 330Ci.

Overall it's pretty subtle looking I think.

I'm not sure it'll give the V8 M3's a run for their money (I can but try! It depends on the power run I guess) but it certainly takes care of E46 M3's!

A few more quick pics for those interested just taken at lunch time.

Wheels, genuine staggered BMW BBS RS (9j / 8j) with E46 modified offset (need a refurb on 2 of them as the dish is showing slight signs of wear on the lacquer)

Hard to get a good pic of this: The intercooler mounted in front of the radiator and aircon rad. The plastic ducting/moulding that is normally there has been removed to make room for the brackets.

Exhaust tips. I looked a lot into the big names like Eisenmann, Miltek etc but they seemed overly expensive and I couldn't see the benefit so ended up getting a custom built system. Not overly loud on idle and normal driving but sounds nice on boost and the engine note is more pronounced and a bit deeper.

Other side of the engine bay. Everything looks near stock at first glance - its a very, very clean installation.

the biggest reason for why i really like that is because so many e46s have absolutely gone to the dogs. the chavs are doing their up most to destroy e46s at the moment

i was just on a BMW board looking for e36 parts (im rescuing a chavved M3 at the mo) and there are scores of e46 m3 being broken, scores of brake discs for sale etc huge replica wheels on chinese tyres

worst "I have a new supercharger kit" thread ever ;)

:p

Looks a lovely setup.

Thanks :)

This was a big contributor to my decision to go this route instead of getting an M3 and starting there. The number of E46 M3's out there which are in a questionable state far outweigh the ones which are actually worth bothering with (and those that are in a well kept state are, quite rightly so, considerably more expensive).

There are some really awful E46s that I see on my way to and from work so when I see either a stock or nicely/subtly modified example, it instantly catches my eye...that's saying something. Shame they've gone this way!
