Whiskey

Alasdair said:
maybe about a double measure, 50ml. I just tend to have one at night before bed, maybe two if I'm in the mood or likely unable to sleep.

Hmmmm... so 350ml a night isn't good then?

:-\

and the occasional ale. .

Can I just ask, what ale? I'm still trying to find one I like...

Here's a question - how MUCH to people drink in a typical 'sitting'?

In a typical sitting, maybe 1/4 of a bottle. At a big sitting (i.e. sitting up until 04:00 listening to music or gaming), maybe a bottle + a few beers.

Can u acquire a taste for Whiskey as to me it taste like poison?

Certainly. Until about 6 years ago, I couldn't stand the smell of the stuff - now I love it and have paid as much as £80 a bottle to get the good stuff.

Sorry but have you tried a premium bourbon?

Yes I have. It's vile.

Personally I don't have a nose for wine like I do whisky. I think once you're past the initial taste of whisky you can start to explore the really complex flavours. It's a case of getting used to the 'whisky' taste, and then you're able to get a lot more out of the drink. I'd like to be like that for red wine, I think I'm more attuned to whisky than wine.

Quoted 'cos it's what I would have said if he hadn't said it first :D

Normally, anywhere between 2-6 single measures (so 50-150ml), depending on what mood I'm in and if I'm working the day after or not. I certainly don't drink it every night though.

And as for developing a taste for it?

Well, I started off by occasionally drinking the odd blend with ice in it as a last drink of the night on a night out (this started maybe 2-3 years ago). Then I tasted a Scottish single malt for the first time sometime last year, and subsequently bought a bottle of it. Then I bought a second, different bottle... and another... and another... up until now, where I have 34 different Scottish single malts, a blend (Black Bottle, for those interested) and three small bottles of Irish whiskey. All of which are open. I also have a small reserve stock of a few of my favourite bottles. So all in all I have around 42 bottles of whisky/whiskey in my room.

So yes, I'd say you can develop a taste for it ;)

I suppose the scariest part of all this is my age: I'm 23 (let me reiterate that I don't drink the stuff every night!). Which leads me to asking a question: how old is everyone here that drinks whisky on a regular/semi-regular basis?

My old man has quite a collection of single malts which he has been training me on ;) My fav at the mo is Isle of Jura, peaty and smooth mmmm... Going to have to wait a couple of weeks before I go back home :(

Badger make some fantastic ales, try Golden Glory or Tanglefoot, I used to live near the brewery, sometime wished i lived in it!

Haha you big snob!
Does that infer that you believe all bourbons are vile?

If so, I rubbish your opinion. If not, let me know what you rate :)

How does that make me a snob

I couldn't possibly say that all bourbons are vile as I haven't tasted them all. All of the ones I have tasted were vile (don't ask me for brands - I have no memory).

This hardly makes me a snob - it simply means I don't like bourbon. The same as some people don't like whisky or rum or gin.

I'm willing to try anything once - if you can suggest a bourbon which I might like, I'll gladly give it a try.

Stan :)

Just teasing, you almost replied as if premium bourbon was not good enough- you preferred ultra-premium :p

For a simple bourbon that isn't the horrid JD stuff, give Bulleit a go (though I imagine you've tried this). Try Knob Creek and Buffalo Trace- both inexpensive but distinctive flavours are within.

Go all out? Try a Blantons or Eagle Rare.

As you say, we all have a different palette so you may dislike all bourbons.
In that case, I can't help you! At least you seem to have an appreciation of the malts :)

I know that Southern Comfort has been disregarded as a Whiskey, but, I was recently bought this;

and was wondering how best to drink it.

I usually have plain southern comfort with lemonade/lime or cherry coke, but as this is different I thought i'd try it another way.

I understand the Southern Comfort confusion but could someone explain why Jack Daniels is not considered whiskey by some of you?

Most people consider "whisky" to be Scotch and "whiskey" to be bourbon, with some strange exceptions.

The makers of Jack Daniels will argue that it's not a bourbon, it's a Tennessee whiskey. It has something to do with the fact that they drip it through maple charcoal. I think that's a bit silly really - it tastes more like bourbon than it does whiskey, so you might as well call it a bourbon.

just picked myself up a bottle of Glenmorangie 15yr from asda, this is the first time ive ever bothered to buy myself a decent whisky though asda didnt have a huge choice. Its quite nice much nicer than anything ive drunk neat spirit wise before and im just wondering if anyone else has tried this and can recommend some others that have this sort of taste

As I said earleir in the thread, this is my fav. whisky.

If you want others, try Glenlivet or the Balvenie - both available at ASDA etc..

As a bit of a thread revival.. I have ran out of both money and whiskey so had to settle for what was in the garage. It was a cheapy bottle of Whyte & Mackay... don't drink it. Enough said, I feel.
