White Noise?

you can buy those special pillows with a scent inside that apparently helps you sleep, never tried it though

...My brain just never seems to switch off, I'm always thinking about something.

Like the brown noise on SimplyNoise though, might well give that a go tonight :D
Regarding the thoughts keeping you up, write stuff down. Wack it into your laptop. Keep a notepad next to your bed. When thoughts start going through your head, write 'em down. That way it clears your mind and you know you'll remember tomorrow, you won't have to dwell on it. It helps. It really does.

Mammalian - yes, room fans are GOOD!

sorry i haven't read most of the thread but i noticed it mentioned and then never really brought up again. the best way i find to fall asleep is with a fan. it has to be a proper room fan and makes the same noise continually. a good size one set on low spin i find makes the best noise to sleep to as it's more relaxing rather then hearing a tiny fan buzz away. this really is such a great way to fall asleep and should be tried by anyone having problems sleeping or that feel that sleep could feel better.

i discovered it 5 or so years ago one summer when it was really hot and i bought a fan and haven't had one night sleep without some sort of fan in the room. only downside is when going away if you don't take a fan you'll notice the difference the next morning. last place i went to had a really great extrator fan in the loo soi left that running all night, was great as it over powered the other half snoring and any background noise.

definitely try a fan, they don't cost very much at all and if you find it doesn't work at least you have one for the summer.

This. One fan drowns out any noise from the kids, two fans let me sleep in the same bed as the missus without getting kicked out to sleep on the couch for snoring :P

^^

Yep, I always go to bed with a fan on, except when it's really cold. I have trouble sleeping and this works a treat for me. :)

I generated some pink noise in Audacity and layered a storm recording over the top of it. It did seem to help to some extent in that I think I got deeper sleep than usual.. I still woke up a few times though, and then got woken up at 5:30 by the next door neighbour starting his motorbike up...

I'm not sure if Brown noise will be much use seeing as it's the higher frequencies that travel better and are more likely to disturb you? I'll give that a go tonight though. I'm not sure how loud I should be playing it either... last night I had it to a comfortable "soothing" level rather than loud enough to drown out an earthquake :D

I tried the storm and some brown noise very quietly and I did flop off to sleep very quickly. It then went **** up and I woke up at 6am wondering what the hell that waterfall type noise was :p

How do you generate pink noise in audacity? I can only see the option for white noise :(

The bath is overflowing! :p

I've just tried and I can't see the option, pink noise is filtered white noise tho, so if I could remember the filter settings you could do it that way. :)

ever tried binaural sound?

http://www.bwgen.com/

really surprised brainwave binaural sound patterns haven't become more popular, they're incredible. software generates presets of binaural sound which sends the brain into different states. i found the sleep preset to work nicely, plus theres a couple of user-submitted presets that may help.

how the hell that gets you to sleep i dont know, silence usually works for me, id sleep for 12 hours a day if i didnt set an alarm. but then again i am a student, comes with the territory.

isnt there something like this thats meant to get you high? just from listening to it, might have a look around for that. :P

well there are presets for meditative states/dream inducing/day dream/OBE etc

obviously no way near as extreme as taking drugs but have had weird meditations on them

I-Doser. I didn't feel any effects, but then binaural beats in general don't seem to have any effect I've found.
