"whitewashing" garbage

Do I care if the Japanese, Korean and Indian film industries are ethnically diverse?

I guess the argument there is that the audiences for those industries are not as diverse as the west? If 90% of people watching Japanese cinema are Japanese, then having 90% of roles cast of Japanese isn't really a thing.

72% of the US were white in the 2010 census (87% in the 2011 UK one). Pretty sure 1 in 4 lead roles in US films are not non-white.

As long as it fits into the story and into the character then who cares.

ie) A black Bond? Sure. A female Bond? No. The entire background to the character relies on the character being a male who never had a mother and was brought up emotionless as a result, a female Bond would have too much empathy by default.

I agree that James Bond and Doctor Who can be portrayed as any race. Doctor as a title is unisex so can be male or female, but James Bond would always have to be male i.e. "my name's Mr Bond, James Bond."

Dennis the Menace would always be male.

Such-and-such female character from Corrie would always be female.

As for whitewashing, I'm not sure really, except that I think it's becoming too political. Whoever the actor or actress is at the end of the, there will always be someone who will get offended. I do see a trend though that the amount of offence that gets taken is directly proportional to the number of Millennials on this planet. Especially those born between 1995 and 1999 - they are the category that are most offended.

I love it when the perpetually offended get in on the act, makes for some pretty funny stuff.

OP seems to be the one with the issue?

Sometimes it makes sense from a storyline perspective (people annoyed that Ben Kingsley was playing 'The Mandarin' until the plot twist) but generally casting yet another white male in a role that was originally a half Asian character is a bit weird

And I wouldn't have an issue with a Black Bond. I'd have an issue with a female Bond as that makes no sense from the source material.

The problem I have with this stuff is when they do it specifically to cast someone because of race, gender or whatever else.

For example, if they cast Doctor Who as a woman specifically to have a woman playing Doctor wlWho, then that is stupid. But if it was silly that she was the best person for the job, then great that's fine.

that's the funny thing with the Egyptian stuff, a white actor with a tan can be a closer approximation to a Egyptian* such as Rami above but there is a weird belief among some African Americans that they were descended from ancient Egyptians... thus they went nuts when Christian Bale played one

(*or at least an American with Egyptian heritage)

I agree, but I suspect that you have the wrong group in mind. As far as I can see, the "perpetually offended" are the people who think white-washing is perfectly OK, not those objecting to it. That side are certainly making far more fuss about it.

More importantly, of all the people here who do not think that white-washing is important, how many are NOT white?

Not sure why this is a big deal. Nobody complained in the media about a black Heimdall, Valkyrie, Nick Fury, Felix Leiter (Casino Royale) or Robert McCall (The Equalizer). They did complain about Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell though. I'm sure if you looked hard enough you could detect some kind of pattern here...

So the pendulum swings back on five roles and you think the job is done?

Why should a white actor be discriminated against for a role they're a good fit for, based on their race? Positive discrimination is the most prevalent form of racism in today's society.

The straight white male can do no right.
If only there were some straight white male roles for him! The poor straight white male!

Give me a break.
