many more quality actors but they are the top 3 off top of my head

In response to ^ the above comment, i think the best part of his acting is the accent in this film particularly, as it never differs, it is always a static accent as if he can speak no differently and that is what i think is the best part about his acting.

I really wanted to put Dicaprio, Pitt and Washington in there aswell among a whole host of other fantastic actors. But the 3 I picked were becuase I would watch any film they were in without even bothering to see what it was about.

My problem is not with Pacino, it is with the film. Pacino obviously achieved what the director was after else it'd have been re-cast or would've had changes made.

I just think that what the director aimed for/achieved was a poor excuse for a movie.

I'd disagree, ok in quite a few films he plays a vaguely similar character but picking three here for emphasis, watch Remember The Titans, Training Day and Man on Fire and then tell me again that he is just Denzel. Unless by saying "just 'Denzel'" that is your way of saying 'a great actor with a decent range'. :p
 
Gah, I knew I shouldn't have clicked on this thread, I hate choosing :p

But I'll try.... in terms of sheer versatility, it's hard to ignore Depp, Day Lewis and Norton. Bale is developing into a fine actor too.

Ten years ago Pacino, Hoffman and De Niro would have been my top three, but I guess the later work, certainly of De Niro and Hoffman, have tarnished my opinion somewhat.

As for the laydees, Jodie Foster and Jennifer Jason Leigh are exceptional.
