This has been touched upon in the transfers thread a few times and given Dave Whelan's comments today (which just seem to be speculation) I thought it might make an interesting thread.

As it will be something decided in the next 3 years or so, the manager will be someone who is obviously quite well known at the moment.

The two 'big name' candidates seem to be Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho.

I like both, but if I had to pick I'd have to side with Mourinho. Pep is fairly new to management in comparison and has only proven himself with arguably the most talented club side in the history of football. Despite playing scintillating football, he's made a lot of mistakes when it comes to improving and managing the Barcelona defence which has cost them on more than one occasion.

Mourinho on the other hand, he knows the league and just seems a better fit as his style is closer to that of Sir Alex (which the squad will be familiar with). I know he's recently signed a contract extension but that doesn't necessarily mean much as it runs roughly to the end of Ferguson's expected tenure.

Obviously someone like Solskjær would be a dream appointment but given that he will have to prove himself at a club bigger than Molde I just don't think it's a realistic goal at the moment.

Your thoughts?

OGS, eventually

I hope it's not Mourinho, not only would they win everything but I like him ATM

My dad is insistent it should be Martin O'Neil or David Moyes.

Myself I'm not sure. Guardiola I'd like to see prove himself with more than one club personally, it would be a gamble. Mourinho seems like the safest bet.

Unless you have a disaster next season you'll have the pick of just about any manager in the world. Don't think Mourinho will leave Real until he's won the CL so that leaves Pep as the obvious choice.

David Moyes always appears to be linked to Man U when Ferguson's retirement is brough up.

When Martin O'Neill left Celtic I would have bet my mortgage on him becoming Man U manager at some point, but his time at Villa and his short time at Sunderland I reckon will mean he wont be considered.

Indirectly this is asking a few different things

(ie how long before another manager is considered, will the debt be paid off by then (ie Mourinho being seriously interested), and what the 1st team looks like by this point (admittedly this is nigh on impossible to answer)

(singapore partial floatation, New Nike deal in a few years & general levels of income are all good reasons why a majority of the current £400m ish debts can be paid off in the next 2 or 3 years)

I can see Moyes, Mouriinho and O'Neil all being considered, and while I like them all for different reasons, Mourinho brings gaurenteed success even though I cant stand his ego. Any given success would feel better imo if it was under Moyes or O'Neil

edit - Smiling Assassin would be a good number 2 (depending on what he is doing at the time of course), but I think to give him the Manager's job would be too much too soon

JM just signed on for another 3 seasons with Real, Pep will undoubtedly be hired within the next 12months at another club and at least commit to 2-3 seasons.
So, it's more who is available at the time when AF steps down, unless they already have their eyes on someone who is less proven.

Got a paper from July 2001 when Moyes was at PNE and he knocked out some of his players in a club and even then he was touted as the next Man United manager.
