Who doesn't have Breakdown cover?

I have RAC cover but tried to use them once to get my bike towed home - they couldn't do it for me... well, they could, but it would mean, calling someone out to try and fix it, I told them it doesn't need fixing it's the immobiliser I know how to fix it but it can't be done at the roadside I want to be towed home. No can do... still they sent a van, and he couldn't fix it but had no way of towing me home and would have to wait to get it brought back. No thanks.

Never needed it for the car, even for the Alfa!!!

Just had a look at a few.

Cheapest thus far is the AA, who want £72 for something which includes recovery to home in the Lakes for myself in any car.

Trouble is it also comes with the roadside assistance (don't need, I'm quite competent at changing a wheel), and the long distance recovery is only if they can;t fix it at the roadside, or arrange a quick local repair. I will absolutely refuse the 1st 2, and I bet they would refuse the long distance recovery if I do.

Never have in 16 years of driving, main reason is I don't drive that far, work is less than 10 miles each way. I have probably been stranded 4 or 5 times twice ran out of petrol, once when starter motor died, and a few times when water pipes burst and car overheated.

Luckily I have friends in the motor trade who have saved my bacon on these occasions.

Used to be in the AA but when they started asking >£100 a year I went to Green Flag which is half the price.

Going back a few years since I actually used the cover "in anger" but know I wasn't that impressed with the AA either response time or attitude when fixing the car (wanted cash up front for a fanbelt). Also had a similar experience to the oother poster regarding motorcycles, years ago (1978!) had a Suzuki 100cc which fell over when parked on uneven surface. Smashed the brake handle, waited two hours for the AA to come out and say, "can't fix that, just ride it home on the foot (rear) brake." Whole point of the exercise was *not* to do that and risk a loss of control...

Haven't put GF to the test yet and hope I don't have to, but I don't think I'd want to be without at least some basic cover to get me off the motorway.

Surly they offered to send a bike trailer out ? if not what's the point of the cover if they can not take your bike home.

My point exactly.

They said they couldn't pro-actively send a trailer out as they would only send an engineer out to try and get me started again - I could have been lucky and have got a big RAC truck to tow me home (had I been in the car) but they can't guarantee sending a trailer out to me, in fact she almost said they wouldn't without a call from their engineer who attended. :/
