Been asked to go with a workmate to check out a 2008 Mini 1.6 Cooper “Sidewalk” Convertible next week, just shy of 100k,it’s MOT history mentioned “Engine oil light on” as an advisory, what is this? - I’m assuming an oil change interval rather than pressure.

Anything else in particular I should look out for? :)

When I had my R53 I was a member of a mini facebook group. Nearly all the people having issues were those with R56 mini's. And there was a lot of people.
Personally, I'd not buy one. 2003-2006 or post 2013 for me.
I know people will have had issues with all generations but the vast majority I saw were from the 2nd gen mini's.

Yup. My nephews R56 JCW likes to drink oil. A litre of oil every 3K or so.

Whereas the B58 in my F56 needs nothing between 12m/8k oil changes.

We had the N18 1.6T and that used very little oil between services maybe down to 3/4 on the dipstick. Never had to put any in with the B48 either might use a bit but without a dipstick hard to tell.

The one thing I found better on the JCW 1.6T N18 was that it made more power all the way to the rev limiter so it was great fun keeping it high up the revs and you got more induction noise for the last 500 ish revs so always worth revving it right out. The B48 has a much wider torque delivery pretty flat from 1500-5500 but tails off towards the redline much quicker in everyday driving due to having almost diesel like torque delivery low down but never sounding or feeling great for the last 1000 or so revs.

Which F56 do you have? A JCW or Cooper S?

I have the F56 JCW and find it encouraging enough to the redline where BHP takes over from the torque. And with the mix of prodigious amount of torque low down and relatively low kerb weight is great for back streets. A right hoon.

F56 JCW don’t get me wrong still fun to drive but our old 1.6T JCW loved to rev with no noticeable tail off to the limiter where you can feel it tail off past 5000-5500 ish on the B48 especially if you ease off the throttle past 5500 then go back on it to the redline where it would be quicker going up a gear to get it back in the torque band.
