Who here owns a Mini?

It's not that exciting compared to some of these on here :) It was my first try with the Mini and I would have liked the 3 door but didn't fancy the faff with my son being 14 and all the places and clubs I have to drop him and his friends off etc. When that stops I will change it for a 3 door 2litre variant. I wanted the 2L engine but the way the packs are done now I didn't want to pay for options I didn't want. I should have ordered a few months earlier while you could still get the 2L with luxury pack.
Looks good, we tried the 5 door before buying the Countryman, wasn’t enough boot space for me.

interesting that the countryman has electric handbrake but the regular mini a manual one.

I bet it’s fairly quick still with the 1.5L engine, would you gain much (apart from fuel consumption) going to the S.

My work colleague has the JCW on order for November and he thinks he's getting the electric handbrake, we shall see.

Yeah It's quick enough for me and the miles I do. I've never bought a car before, I've always had my wife's hand me downs. So I got rid of a 2015 1.2TSI fabia which actually I like the engine in, but this is far better 25-80mph. As I said I'd have gone 2L if I wanted Panoramic roof, Nav, upgraded speakers, rear camera and front sensors. I'm sure if I get another mini the packs and options will all be stripped back out again and everything is just added now to simplify the builds now they are end of line before the new models come out.

My wife doesn't realise it yet, but when it's time to change her ****ing awful Arona she's getting a countryman ;)

I've always been really quite surprised at how 'quick' the 1.5 litre is. For a normal hatchback the performance really is very good. The exhaust is surprisingly loud as well, I'm not sure it isn't at least as 'sport' as my M340i :D

It really is such a good small car and I think it's averaged about 50mpg over our ownership as well which was also a surprise as my experience of the same engine in previous BMW 1 and 2 Series wasn't as good.

My wife absolutely loves hers. I find it a blast to drive, the manual box feels great.

Yeah I also would have had a manual if they still sold them. I'm hoping the new/refresh does. I'm worried that too many years in with this auto gearbox will turn me into my wife and I never want a manual gearbox again!

On just the 1.5?
Unfortunately, it seems like it will be auto across the entire range, which I find to be a real shame. I wish they would do something special for the last gen ICE Mini, but it's looking like more of a refresh than anything substantial. Seems like their focus has well and truly shifted to electric. I appreciate this was inevitable, but it would be nice if they had went all out considering this is their last ICE production Mini. Just so disappointing lol :(

Think I've said before but I'm not keen on the styling of the new model coming next year. It looks less 'chunky' without the plastic cladding (and that's practical too for scrapes). Don't like the spider-man eyes rear lights. Maybe I will get used to it but prefer the look of the current model. The interior of the new model might be better though, it's less fussy anyway.

PPF on the countryman 2023 JCW I drove seemed to absolutely kill the exhaust noise of the car.

My old 2016 JCW F56 with Pro exhaust was like a old v12 ferrari in comparison. Newcars in general vs their old counterparts are so sterile and muted.

That's a shame, the configurator lets you configure for Manual on most of the range about from the 1.5.

And that seemed to suggest they would do manual again.

You can currently order a manual of the existing Mini.
I couldn't and neither could a work colleague when we ordered in June ish. That's how I ended up with an auto. Both from dealers 80 odd miles apart. I tried to get a quote for one on Carwow too with no luck at that time. But I know around April when we first looked I could and order any other engines in different add on packs. Two months later I couldn't.

I’d want to see and drive the car before ordering, I wouldnt be putting my money down for one speculatively.

imo it doesn’t look as good in photos as the current model but I am sure the ICE will be a step up in the interface and the overall looks will grow.

It is a completely new car.

The current car is unusual in that it has been in production for almost a decade.

I guess it will depend on the model, but if you compare it so say the current JCW hatch, it doesn't seem like the leap you would expect for a new gen car. It seems more like a major face lift more than anything? Based on the same chassis as the F56 (The new electric is different I believe), same engine but with minor tweaks (Same power, slightly more torque) but a new 7 speed dual clutch auto, rather than a choice of manual or the 8 speed auto. Like you say, it's based on a 10 year platform, yet you would expect a major overhaul, and not just how the car looks. It seems like their main focus is on the interior and exterior design, more than how the car drives. Looking at the previous gen Mini's, there were always more substantial changes between generations. I've not heard much on the handling side of things, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were little to no changes. But I hope I'm wrong.

In contrast, if you compare the current gen electric hatch to the new one, then yeah it is an entire new car as it has been built from the ground up with electric in mind, rather than a modified F56 as is the current.

Yeah, it's unfortunate but it's the way things are. My dads 2018 F56 JCW with the stock exhaust sounds nice, where as my previous 2020 JCW F56 Mini sounded very muted with the filter. Maybe this is intentional, to ease us into electric. :p

I’m going to view a 2016 clubman S tomorrow/Wednesday . We’ve been on the look out for a 5 door hatch with the right spec for a while and the only one is found has just slipped away annoyingly! However there’s a 2016 clubman come up for sale close by with the right spec and 40k miles and the auto which the Mrs wants.

Does anyone know of anything I need to look for?

I’ve also seen a JCW for not much more but I’m worried the wife will find that a bit harsh comfort wise and looking online it’s no quicker?
