Who here owns a Renaultsport?

If they are genuine Renault disks that's a good deal, as guys have said.

I changed the front pads and then fluid on mine today. God I forgot how amazing fresh Carbon Loraine's are! Squeaky buggers though, even with liberal copper slip.

Bought myself a 250 3 weeks ago, needs a new gearbox already.

(fortunately i don't have to pay for it!)

Sorry to hear.

How old out of interest?

Unluckily Renault do seem to have a bit of a reputation for chocolate gearboxes.

Certainly would not want to be lumbered with the cost of a replacement box in mine (one of the new Clio 200 turbo's). The replacement cost for the clutch/s repair kits is scary enough (£1,600+VAT+ 8 hours fitting). Luckily car still well within the warranty period. Nothing wrong with mine, just got talking to a Renault techie one day about part costs etc.

Hi guys i'm looking for a new motor and have pretty much decided on a renaultsport clio rs200, budget is 9k, I am looking for a full fat with cup chassis, recaro's would be desirable but not essential. I'm in inverness but willing to travel for the right car.

What sort of mileage and age should I be aiming for here based on budget, and what are the things to look out for? and are there any rs200 specific questions I should be asking.

Thanks for any advice that can be offered.

Can't help too much, but I popped into Renault for a test drive in Inverness before and they were awesome. Handed me the keys to a brand new 200, and told me to come back whenever. Went back and said I'll think it over, no hard sell, pushyness etc.

I had to come back earlier than I wanted, due to the old man turning a fine shade of white :p

I'd try and make sure it has that full spec, most desirable and easy to resell.

Points to look at include Recaro and steering wheel wear.

Main weakness is the gearbox, syncros are weak and often fail causing crunching between gears.

Should be able to find one circa 30k-40k miles.

Edit: Early 200s will be due belt change too. There is some argument on the interval but it is either 5 or 6 years.

thanks!, any difference between 2010 and 2011 200's? both seem to be around similar prices depending on mileage.

Do the alloys suffer corrosion?, one of the dealers I spoke to who had one said they had just been refurbed, but I wasn't sure why they would have to have been given age and mileage. Just made me concerned with regards to how it was looked after previously, as most of them are far away from me I don't want to take a chance traveling to one and being disappointed or wasting my time.

200s didn't change anything worthwhile over the years. Gearing alterations were made during earlier 197 production only.

My mate has a 59 plate 200 and the only difference I can recall from newer models is they changed some of the badges!

Probably just slightly kerbed wheels also, they don't suffer specifically - a refurb after a few years isnt unheard of.

ok thanks appreciate the input, I've got a little time to shop around so just want to take my time to get the right one.

What is the reliability on these like? I am not expecting it to be flawless, and am fairly competent in tracking down issues and fixing things both electrical and mechanical, but one of the reasons I've decided on this car is that its not too old, will provide a lot of fun as a driver, and hopefully not throw up any huge surprise bills, and despite being able to and having equipment to change suspension, or swap a gearbox etc, I don't really want to have to.. How bad is the syncro issue? I've had syncro issue on previous cars and its been liveable for the most part with the right oil, frequent oil changes and avoiding certain usage patterns, having the gearbox off at some point isn't out of the question as i'd do flywheel/clutch etc at the same time but would rather decide the timing than be forced to do it. Has the problem been traced to a source? as in syncro materials or oil used?

Reliability on the engine is solid and regular oil changes (every 6k) are recommended. The most expensive job really is only the cambelt.

In comparison I've done 40k miles since buying my 182 a few years ago and apart from standard service stuff I've changed -

Thermostat
Passenger door lock
Lambda sensor
Rear shocks

I've found it to be reliable with very few niggles.

It's the syncro material that's the weak link, if you google it I'm sure there you'll find plenty of details!

The mate I mentioned above had his fail after 40k miles - it was 2 months out of warranty so Renault contributed 80%.

Issues becoming more common are;

Exhaust manifold flexi blowing
Electric window mechanism seizing
Wipers seizing
Gearbox synchro issues
CSC failing
Perfohub ball joints failing
Sticky handbrake mechanisms
Brembos need taking care of to avoid shuddering and seized pins

Nothing too drastic but just good to be aware of the common issues.

Finally found a well looked after Renault Clio 172 (Full Fat) in Monaco Blue - love the colour and quite rare!

Standard spec plus the following:
Cup dampers
Cooksport springs
KTEC stealth exhaust
Brembo HC discs
DS2500 pads
Turini alloys with Uniroyal Rainsport 3 tyres

Just bought some new exhaust mounts as old ones worn out. Looking at either re-trimming the steering wheel as suffers the usual issues or replacing with a Renaultsport Sabelt one. Might also fit some bucket seats but don't plan on stripping it out, just keeping it as a fast road car with occasional track use and a trip around Europe next year :)

Any thoughts are opinions appreciated :)

Looks smart and well cared for.

Lose the Williams stickers - if you want to go down the retrim route Snappy (cs forum name) is your guy.

Don't worry, they're coming off - my mate has already picked at one :o But definitely prefer the clean look :)

Definitely will use Snappy, his work is tremendous!
