Anyone here getting a new Mac Pro? If so, what spec are you getting and what will you be using it for? Also what, if any accessaries will you be getting?

Just placed my order but I won't be getting till Feb :(

FCP then? What are you doing for storage?

Yeh FCP, it just got an update giving 4k support today.

Gonna get a Promise Pegasus2, and fill it with 8 1TB Samung Evos, as primary storage. Will use my current Microserver for most things though and online backups.

Total computing decadence.

I hope you get a return on your investment.

1-2 projects and it's paid of :). So if it arrives in feb as stated, it will be paid of along with my new storage system by May easily . Then it is making me profit from then on. The time it will save me over my current iMac will make it worth the cost.

Fair enough, I guess it makes sense if you have to run FCP.

Why an all-flash array vs something that can tier the storage? You're going to fill 6TB incredibly quickly if you're ingesting 4K.

Well I am finding currently, 40GB is about 2 minutes of 4k footage. So 8TB in my primary storage gives me 200 minutes of runtime, which is more than enough as I do commercials. Il need about 4-6 TB for the RAW footage and the rest for proxy footage, renders etc.

Going all-flash for fast access. Time is money when you are a one man operation currently.

EDIT: Copied my numbers down wrong from my breakdown of time. Updated.

You're dealing with video though which is laid out sequentially, at which point the difference between SSD and 15k SAS arrays is minimal. Flash excels with random workloads.

Obviously it's your money and you can do what you want with it but there are very specific circumstances an all-flash array makes sense, and pulling video off it isn't one of them.

Yeah, I mean it genuinely if you're trying to make a living off it. Good luck to you.

For me though, it would be too much of a risk given the expense. Plus the unproven form factor is a minor cause for concern.

Well I am already getting constant income using my 2012 iMac, so I know the money will be there to pay it off. It will just do an equivalent project in about half the time if not less, so there isn't any question about it.

The new form factor doesn't concern me, as I trust Apples engineering department.

Jelly, would love one. But for my needs it's completely overkill a Mac Mini could comfortably run everything I need.

If I was to buy one... I'd find it annoying that I'd have to wait until Feb to have it delivered... Even the basic ones were saying Jan delivery when I do believe they said it would be available in Dec. I know they prob have some stock in shops, but some people want to buy online.
