Who is getting the New Mac Pro

I don't get it what is so special about its looks (its small yer cool, ) that make it worth getting this over getting 98%(or better) of the performance and 1000000x more upgrade ability on building a hackintosh? (people have said there duel booting anyway) i am pretty shore with a few tweeks on what i got i could have got a setup on my comp when i built it that would run mac OSX/win and it cost less than half the base cost for the macpro and is looking at been more powerful than the 6k one. Because other than the looks (which are not even on the top 10 of priority's when picking high end desktop PC's (because there hid under the desk so who cares.
there's nothing going for it in my eyes.
I gess there cool for people who just want a nice looking box that people can show off and say "its a mac pro" even when those types of people will never get close to using the hardware to its limits.

And am amazed the the waiting times of this crap.. WEEKSSSSSSS and weeks and weeks.... my last comp (5 weeks ago) i posted on here at like 10pm.. got a spec some people tweaked it left it over night got up on a Saturday morning checked the topic logged into OC main site ordered it, got in the car drove for 1h 30mins picked it up came back home got a xl bacon double cheeseburger meal the built it and by 6pm that day it was up and running.

Because some people make money off of their profession and a Mac is just another tool they need, which they could do without being totalled by an OS update. But I enjoyed deciphering that post, keep it up.

I was on the verge of ordering a new display, either the Dell 27" (non 4k) or a Dell 4k but on Tuesday I got a 30" Apple Cinema Display for free from work :)

Probably not the best in quality for gaming etc but it looks good, has a decent resolution and of course was free! Matte screens ftw.

There is a difference between using a Mac OS and high-end hardware and spending 30-40% over what would be normal prices for things just because it has a mac logo on the case.

Hmm, if you actually read some reviews about the hardware, you might realise you're not dealing with your typical consumer desktop stuff.

I too have a Hackintosh but it's not made up of a Xeon processor, Dual D700 graphics chips with 6GB of VRAM and more importantly a SSD with PCIe x4 bandwidth.

Of course there's going to be a mark up for making it look as good as it does and work out of the box but I think a lot of peoples assumptions on that are inaccurate.

Just googling mac pro price comparison nets these for DIY builds. Never mind that the MP is cheaper than comparable Dell, BOXX, and HP workstations as well.

Testing the ‘Apple tax’: What would it cost to build a Windows version of the new Mac Pro?

Apple’s new ‘overpriced’ $10,000 Mac Pro is $2,000 cheaper than the equivalent Windows PC

The 30" is still a very good display, and I certainly do like that aluminium, and matte screen. It boggles the mind that Apple are so keen on Glossy displays, I tried them and all I got was glare and eye strain. :p

That's a nice monitor but the aspect ratio doesn't suit me. I'd rather get a nice 16:9 UHD monitor.

I have a dual link DVI to MiniDisplayPort adapter that I use to connect my MacBook Pro to it.

For what it's worth it is primarily plugged into my PC/Hackintosh that obviously has DVI anyway.

Yeah, indeed. Those aluminium ACD's are still lovely today. I've had mine since 2007. It's lovely how there's no reflection even with a window behind me. Sure there is a slight grey-ish sheen but it doesn't wash out colours.

Plus I love how the aluminium always blends in with the environment.

I decided to grab the Windows 8 evaluation version and run this.

Not bad at all

I heard the fan kick in midway through the FireStrike test.

Also Titanfall runs like a champ with Insane textures and maxed out along with MSAA x4 at 1080p.

Ungine Heaven with Crossfire enabled. Unigine sees the GPU's at 79xx series, while they're still FirePros in FirePro control panel and 3DMark
Although something feels off, even with Crossfire in enable in FirePro control panel the results look more inline with a single D700, than both.

I'm extremely happy with the machine, and it simply powers through FCPX. My only issue there is my horribly slow external drives.

There's also plenty of room for improvement with drivers. AMD are always a tad slow getting drivers to mature.

Perhaps a Promise desktop raid or maybe even a Thunderbolt Drobo model then? :)

I personally use a USB 3.0 RAID enclosure, just with two drives. It gets pretty acceptable speeds.

I've been keeping an eye on Lacie's newly announced Thunderbolt 2 5Big RAID enclosure.

5 drives vs 4 in the Pegasus, and still has RAID 5/6, or a hybrid setup of both 0, and 1 for some drives.. The older Lacie only supported JBOD, 0, and 1.

They also announced new rack that looks amazing. The price will be just silly though, I imagine.

Personally I'd probably get the 5Big with the least amount of storage and just swap in drives of my own choosing.

Lacie, Promise and others are horrible for price gouging when adding storage to their enclosures.

I'm only put off by the lack of a USB3.0 connection. I currently have a lacie thunderbolt/USB3.0 drive and their TB drivers just don't work with Windows 8 Enterprise. So I'm forced to plug it into a USB hub when I need access to it.

If you want lots of flexibility get one of those ThunderBolt to SAS bridges, then use any external disk array you want.

This will void the warranty unfortunately.
I purchased a refurbished 2Big with 2x3tb drives last year and wondered if I could swap the 3tb drives to some quick SSDs. While the quick release drive trays are accessible, the drives themselves have a tamper proof sticker on to dissuade this activity, which is a shame. It also means that if a drive fails you have to send it back to Lacie for replacement.

I'm not sure I would be happy spending the price-premium on a new Lacie product and immediately void the warranty. Especially as their build quality is often reportedly not quite as good as you'd hope.

Noticed a few comments regarding the cost - overpriced, poor value for money, etc. However, I read on Ars Technica (I think) that Mac Pros are incredibly good value for money compared to similar spec'd workstations. It was mentioned that for video pros, the Mac Pro is a complete no brainer. Out of interest, who do you Mac Pro users think of that?

mac pros aren't bad value for money per see, but it can get expensive when you do a BTO and start adding more RAM and drives. These are horrendously expensive over what it would cost you to source yourself.

The other issue of course is that mac pro uses proper workstation grade kit, so uses ECC memory etc.. which might be overkill for what you want to use it for. Most people don't compare mac pros with similar professional workstations and compare it with high end gaming PCs. When you swap out the firepros for ATI gaming cards, and swap out the xeons for intel core i7 processors, its easy to cry that its overpriced without trying to match it spec for spec.

mac pros aren't aimed at the sort of people that want ATI gaming cards and include the firepros for a reason.
